Job Hunting After 50...Tips I've Learned
In the last 6 months being unemployed, I've learned a few "tips" for people over 50 looking for a job. I would like to share them with you in the hopes that I may help someone. (I am 60).
- There is a career coaching site www.careerconfidential.com run by Peggy McKee. She offers free webinars that are very insightful. Many of her topics are geared toward people over 50. Some Tips of Hers that I learned:
- If you've had the same hairstyle the last 20 years...update it. I did this. This is especially true for women.
- Buy an outfit or 2 that is "in style but professional" if you haven't already. This is especially true for women.
- Create a LinkedIn profile if you haven't already. Add connections from your past professional roles. Be active on LinkedIn which shows you are computer / social media literate. Always add a photo, and a background photo. You can use mine as an example: www.linkedin.com/in/cathy1
- Update your resume - use keywords and bullet points. No paragraphs as they never get read. Quantify your accomplishments using numbers, dollars and percentages where ever you can.
- Try to remain upbeat (yea right). Depressed and frustrated is more like it. I do not mean to sound like a know it all or sarcastic in any way shape or form. I hope that this helps somebody, and for more help you can visit her website www.careerconfidential.com. (No, she doesn't know I'm sharing this with you. I am not getting a kickback of any kind. I'm doing it out of the kindness of my own heart). My kickback is that I help someone. Good Luck and God Bless. ~ Cathy

Hi Cathy Karsznia , Interesting tips. I think the hairstyle and outfit tip applies to both men and women. It's sad to think job candidates get judged on their appearance but unfortunately that does happen. Peggy's site has some great information too. Thanks for sharing!
