Annoyed
I had an interview yesterday for an electric company, Sales position. The first half of my interview was great, but the second half was with the GM and as soon as I sat down he says "this is going to sound like a strange question, but what nationality are you?" I said "excuse me?" And he asked again. I proceeded to tell him but I was super uncomfortable! And I wanted to know what this had to do with my skill set. Any thoughts what should I do?

How bad do you want the job? You made it to the interview.. You are so close. Why would you be offended by that. How is this discrimination or racist. Hes probably trying to get to know you better. It has nothing to do with the job. Even if you were applying for a tech support position and you were from India does it really bother you that much. I'm not a racist or a stereotype. INDIA most populated country....probably has way more tech support people compared to the US. I dont understand why people are so uptight and sensitive about this. Most applacations you fill out ask for your race. Next people will be crying over this and calling it racists. You should've answered the question without any hostility. Be proud of your nationality and if you are a legal citizen here in the USA be proud you are American. Sorry if this offended you or anyone else. It looks like theres 2 Trump supporters here lol.

That question is not allowed but he is trying to pick you just to see would you answer the question but don't, just talk about something else and start talking about your skills and then he will notice that you're not playing around with question he asking just keep talking forward that's my subjections to that answer.

It was probably just related to the ignorance of the interviewer, but we all should not be so quick to judge. We all expect the freedoms allowed by this society, and they should not be limited to specific groups.

dont feel so nervous go with a better additude dont be afraid to answer questions

What this mgr did was to give you an indication of the culture of this company with such an illegal question. If they did know they are blatantly racist. If they didn't know, they are grossly incompetent in their HR department. These are potential red flags. You may want to re-examine your decision to work at such a place.

If you do not progress in the hiring process that question can be deemed as discriminatory and subject to a civil rights violation. You will need to think about what if any action you want to take.

I would have said "I'm from the Land of EQUAL OPPORTUNITY, have you ever been there?

Report him to the DOL

That is such a red flag, if you don't get the job, contact the EEOC
Ashika, that is the question you should have asked the GM. We have no clarification of his question, so we could only speculate. I would have asked the GM to clarify the purpose of the question. At this point if you confront the question, you may take yourself out of consideration. I would send a thank you email for the interview, and ask them about next steps. The question appears out of context, but without being there it's hard to say. Good Luck...
