What you are willing to do to get a job.

I am in a predicament with a possible employer. They want a Managerial reference, as you all may be aware of, almost all companies frown upon that and say their policy prohibits them doing so and that everything must go through HR. I was asked well why can’t you explain the situation and have them give you their personal email address. Then would go on to say that their company also has that same policy against managers giving references out without going through HR. To me that means they are unethical because why would you want me to break their company policy if their own company wouldn’t do it either. Why are they asking for this ex employer to,break their policies but wouldn’t even do,it themselves. What am I missing?

Hi Monique Montano -

Let me just get this straight, the company you are interviewing with wants to get a reference from your old manager, but does not want the HR reference, but one directly from the manager?

I am not sure why that is a problem. Many of my own references are from past managers, and often give a personal email address (with permission, of course).

Could you provide a little more explanation on your issue? I am still confused. Thanks! I'd love to help!
