No Experience Necessary
I work in retail, and am trying to venture out into other areas, ideally I am looking for some type of office work. I see all types of ads claiming No Experience Necessary, Will Train the right Person. Without having any experience in a field Im trying to get into, how do I make myself appeal to employers when my resume is the complete opposite of what I am applying for? Once I get into an interview, I can explain myself better to potential employers, but I am having a very hard time even getting past the application stage at this point.

Hi Dawn, The key to making the transition is to figure out how to highlight all of your transferrable skills to the new company. Put yourself in the employer's shoes: what in Dawn's experience convinces me (the hiring manager) Dawn will be good at the job? My guess is that in your retail experience you've needed to: keep things organized, sort out miscommunications, track items, follow up on customer issues, provide feedback to customers and managers, anticipate & handle unusual requests... among other things! Use examples like this to describe HOW you've operated in your previous jobs... and any numbers you can use, the stronger your example. E.g. "Tracked 1,500 items being sold/re-ordered on a weekly basis", or "Managed high-volume cashier line that processed (on average) 27 items sold per customer." (You get the idea.) Also, if there is a detailed job description, you can tailor your cover letter and/or profile to the prospective job you want.
Good luck ~ let us know if this helps! Marijoy
