Can I Spot A Job Scam?

I am getting better at spotting hob scams. Interviews by social media. Offers, sight-unseen with job offers that are salaried high above the going rate. Again, based on my resume which shows proficiency in a whole different area. These are a couple. What is the purpose of these scams?

Hi Cedric, this is awesome. And you're so right. Virtual interviews are a sign, "too good to be true" offers are a sign, jobs with no real qualifications. They are all signs that the "offer" you're about to receive is fake. The purpose of this can be a few things. Here is what I've learned so far.

  1. Classic scam. They offer you the position, then tell you that they need your bank account information so that they can pay you. THIS IS VERY BAD, AND DO NOT FALL FOR IT EVER! Once they receive their bank account information they drain your account, sometimes steal your identity, but the for sure mess up your credit and your finances for years and years. People have lost life savings with these scams. Never ever give anyone your bank account information!
  2. Fake check scam. They offer you the position, you accept. They ask for your address, so that they can send you a check for your first paycheck and for "supplies". When the check arrives it is for much more than expected, so they ask you to send the remainder, or a portion, elsewhere. In the time it takes you to deposit and send the money, the bank finally learns that the check was fake (because these fake checks are very convincing, it can sometimes take a few days or a week for the bank to realize it was fake!). You will NEVER get that money back. If you receive a check for work you have not yet done, always take it to your bank and tell them what is going on so that they can check the legitimacy FIRST THING. You won't lose money this way! Some folks have lost thousands.
  3. Re-shipping scam. This is where your job is to receive boxes of items and re-ship them elsewhere. This SEEMS like a good gig, and some folks have even been paid to do this! But here's the catch: the items you're receiving and re-shipping are either stolen or have been purchased with stolen credit card information. Taking part in this sort of scam can land you in some pretty hefty legal trouble!

I actually love researching to see if things are scams are not (it is always exciting!) so please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions about job scams! You can reach me here or at askemily@jobcase.com
