Wrongful termination

I was let go from a home health company because i got sick at work. I had called in the day before and informed them i was sick and didnt need to go in the next day but was told by the office scheduler to go in anyway that i didnt have to have any physical contact with the client. So i was told i was taken off schedule until further notice. So when i got better i called in to inform them i was ready to go back to work which was 2 days later and i was informed i was being terminated because i did not clean up behind myself when i became sick. Am i in the wrong?

Whoever plans your schedule should have known that in a health services office it would be assumed that staff might become ill more often than in another type of office. They should have had a staffing backup plan in place. The fact that they also expected you to clean up after yourself after becoming sick leads me to believe that very little planning went into how to handle a situation where a staff member becomes ill. This should have already been thought through in a more detailed manner. Being sick is not something you can control and in your sick state, it is not reasonable to expect you to clean or do anything besides to get yourself home so you can rest and recover.

Aside from the planning issue, having staff in the office who are also ill could be dangerous to patients who come for treatment.

I don't think you were in the wrong. In fact, it sounds to me like you did everything you could to keep communication open about your illness and accommodate your employer's demands.

It may not change the fact that you were let go, but hopefully knowing that you did nothing wrong will give you the confidence you need to get back out there and look for a new position. I have faith in you! You sound like an excellent and conscientious employee.
