Too Unexperienced?

I am 16 years old. It is getting harder and harder for me to find my first job in my area. I am graduating in June of next year, and it is time for me to start working and learn to provide for myself. I am paying for everything my senior year from my senior ball and prom stuff, my cap and gown, my invitations to my graduation, and my pictures, and other expenses. On the other hand, I have applied for 8 jobs and I have not heard from any of them. Not even for an interview. I have called at least once a week to show that I am interested in the job. Even after all of the calls, I was still yet to hear back from them. Like Bi-Lo, I applied for a cashier. I then called and checked on my application and they said that they didn't have any cashier positions available. She informed me that they had a position open for the bakery and deli, but you have to be 18 to work in this position. They have 18+ aged cashiers. It would make sense to put all the older people in things like the deli or meat department and let the younger people work the cashiers. People like myself that are trying to get their first job.

I was told by one job that I wasn't experienced enough, but what am I supposed to do for my first job, to get experience. I can't have experience if no one will hire me. It makes no sense to me. What am I supposed to do?

Is there a chili's or an applebee's in your area? my first job was hostess at chili's. They hired me at 16 with no experience.

I absolutely admire you for taking charge and being so independent. We need more young people like you around. I think you'd be better suited looking for those typical first jobs like, grocery bagger, movie theater usher, fast food worker. Cashier in a supermarket really isn't a first job thing and I can see why they'd want someone with experience. Just be persistent. Whatever you do, you'll succeed because you already have the right mindset.

Hey Kait, when I was in that spot the beat thing I did was "bs" the work experience. Now what I mean is you may not have experience in a business. But Im sure youve done work for people(?) So use them as references. Getting a job when youre 16 isnt easy, but not impossible. Just keep in mind what available jobs there are at the places you apply to. And harass those managers! If they wont take your call after a couple days, call back everyday unless told otherwise.

I'm too finding a job and I am 17 and they are saying the same thing for me that I'm not experienced enough which is pathetic. I am a senior this year trying do things for my last year and these jobs are not helping me!!!!

So sorry you're having a tough time, Kaitlyn. It sounds like you are doing all the right things. I would say just keep doing what you're already doing. Keep applying at grocery stores, fast food restaurants, movie theaters, and even places like Target.
