I need some serious help!
I am trying desperately to find a work from home coder position. While there are quite a few out there, the problem is. is I have no experience. I must work from home because of a disabled husband. How do I break into this field? I have tried everything I can think of. I am AHIMA certified, and hold an Associate's degree in health information technology. This is driving me nuts. I can't get experience if I have no experience. Any body have any good advice or leads?

Greetings, Did you take classes with a certified AHIMA college? Check with AHIMA because I think that they count that time as experience. If you are a member of AHIMA I also believe they have resources for searching for jobs. Best of luck

Dear Susan: there are free programs for individuals who live with disabilities. It depends where you live. You can contact the Boston office of disability or go online and type in jobs for the disabled. Many online training can occur for you as well and there is money out there to pay for your classes. You have to do the research by phone.
Ask a reference librarian too. They have a wealth of information. People who live with disabilities have more barriers too; but, with challenges, there is opportunities.
Contact local agencies and ask someone in higher authority. Contact local training programs through the Commission for disabled individuals. You are protected by federal and state laws.
I wish you all the best that you deserve. Never give up.
Susan, I'm going to sound like a broken record but your best opportunities for work at home medical positions would be with insurance companies. You would require a private office due to HIPAA privacy laws and hardware dedicated to this application only. I've yet to work for any insurance organization who didn't provide their own general knowledge test prior to hiring but it shouldn't be too difficult for you. There are also companies who have physician offices under contract for billing purposes and they also use home coders however since they tend to be national rather than local you would be restricted to only providing services for which you have state licensure. Unlike your driver's license, your coding license doesn't travel from state to state. Good luck in your search.
