Im done...

I guess its official... I'm old. 51.. just got turned down from a job that i have experience in... what's left... can't pay rent. Be on the streets in two weeks... can't sleep...When i do, if i don't wake up. It'll be ok with me... that's just how i feel. I remember when you can walk into an establishment and show them what you know. Now everything is done via internet. Its a shame.. all this experience i have. And can't land a job... what happens to me now...dunno what to do but lay down and hope not to wake.

Hey Tyrone, I agree with Mariam whole-heartedly. First, the term "OLD" only exists if you allow it to exist within you or your life. I read in my daily scripture verse that we call into existence what happens to us. That means if you give up you will experience suffering until (like Miraiam said) God decides to take you off this earth. He is the only one that has the last say so. I'm quite sure in your tenure of life you have heard the term "A Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Waste" well I have realize from various experiences that it is true. If you don't keep the brain functioning e.g. reading, thinking and motivated it will allow you to go down e.g. depression, negative thoughts and perhaps actions, etc. You can't allow this one incident or other life situations to determine that life is over, especially since you are not the determinator of such an action. I am 54 (very close to being 55) and when I was young I thought that this age was old but now that I am here I don't have the same mentality. Why? Because I am not finish with being a productive member of society. I am not famous or close to it or functioning in some giant company/agency but I still have hope and am still striving to do something great for society. It may aor may not happen but I refuse to give up trying. Think of something that you have a passion for or that you are good at and capitalize on it. But don't ever give up! Lastly, but never, ever in the least, don't ever forget Got in your life. He's the power source and force that has gotten you thus far in your life (whether you want to believe it or not). I pray that these words of inspiration has helped you and will give you the determination and motivation to "Keep It Moving"! Have A Blessed Day! Pray, Pray, Pray everyday and every minute for comfort and support.

Hi Tyrone, I will certainly keep you in my prayers. I want to share my experience with you. I'm 54, female and was in a position just like yours. At that time (which was about the lowest point ever in my life) I called the local community college and I made an appointment to speak to a counselor there and they were able to tell me that I could apply for FAFSA. This government program helps to pay for all or most of your college costs. I applied, went back to school and 4 years later I have a bachelors degree in Social Work. There are jobs everywhere! I also found out that social workers can get all or most of their student loans erased if they follow certain criteria. Now I have a job that I love at the age of 54. I thought I could never accomplish it and I did it!! Please consider going back to school. It is never too late.
Best of luck JP Illinois

My name is Donnie, I am 45 and just got out of prison Feb. 17 2016. I got a job with a temporary agency it didn't pay but min. wage but I've been on the same ticket ever since and now I make $3984.00 a month. They need people on a daily basis. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and man up no one is giving a handout in this economy.

Hi Tyrone, I handle Social Security Disability Law and it seems you are able and willing to work but just not getting the opportunity to do so. Have you considered chains like Walmart that stills hires people within your age group. When my day ends, I'm going to search and see if I find any program in your area. I am sorry to hear everything is crashing for you. Maybe you can go down to your DSHS office and try to sign up for section 8 along with all their other services. That way you receiving benefits won't hurt the person you are currently living with because you will be living on your own. So you have 2 weeks to sorted out. Make sure you have DSHS know the urgency of your situation. They may also be able to help with getting you work. Don't know if you believe in God but my favorite bible verse is 2 Corinthians 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. It just comforting to me and I hope it may be to you. Again, I will check out there for any programs but my suggestion is for you to go to your local DSHS and get help asap as there's a process with everything.

Wish I had some words of comfort, Tyrone. But I don't. The person I thought I loved, told me on my birthday that I was no longer attractive and they wanted a divorce -- after ONE year of marriage. The year just went downhill from there. I have been rejected from job after job and like you, I think I am about to just give up.. hope to sleep and not wake up. And I don't want to hear all the God will provide talk, cuz he hasn't! It's been almost 12 months now... Anyway, hope something works out for you.

Tyrone, never give up. You know, advice is worth what we are willing to pay for it. So free advice is generally worth what. Having said this, some thoughts.

I too suffered an 8 month off work period several years ago at 60+ years old. Financially devasting, completely demoralizing, but my faith stayed STRONG.

I found that the key to re-employment is your network. Reach out to every living person in your contacts list and send them your resume. They may not have something but they will know somebody, who knows somebody, who knows somebody ...

A second means of income is consulting. This is where Gray hair has an advantage. It is not expensive to open an LLC. Go to your contact list once again to let everyone know you are available for contract work.

Swallow the pride and change all your social media profiles, alert EVERYONE that you are in the full time, or contract job market.

You have no reason to hang your head. You have to re-market yourself, and to a different audience. The conventional means you are used to, to "get a job", doesn't exist anymore. Redefine yourself. Your age is not a negative factor. It is a benefit when you use it to your advantage.

Change everything. They way you've always done things, even the way you've always dressed, does not have a place today. Embrace the changes. For example: Get rid of the pad of paper! Show up with a tablet, any tablet you can afford, and write your notes with a stylus. Or write your notes in a journal rather than a portfolio with a pad of paper, and use a nice pen, but refer to your resume on the tablet, also for email, calendar, contacts, etc.

There are inexpensive, even free classes, free services that will help re-write your resume. Embrace the changes they recommend. Mine changed drastically, for a $50.00 investment.

Volunteer. You never know who is there volunteering with you. It will give you purpose, that will blossom.

Most of all ... Lift your head ... Get out of bed ... Contact everyone you ever knew. Visit everyone you can! Holy smokes, NEVER post that picture again (is that your headboard in back of you, like you are sitting on the side of your bed?)!! Try smiling! Yes, I actually am trying to shake you up a bit.

Get out there! Be ready for what God has in store for you.

Mr. Watkins, I definitely understand your plight because I'm in the same exact situation! Things have changed so tremendously these days that it does almost seem hopeless, however I've come to tell you to keep the faith! I've made the same comment about hoping to not wake up but then I do know that won't help either. That's a permanent resolution to a temporary situation and besides my children will suffer great loss because of my hurt, and I sure your family will too. I've never encountered this much adversity in my life, and no one could've told me this is where I'd be in my 50:s. I don't even know how to be homeless and I'm sure you are wrestling with some of these same issues, but I want to encourage you to stay strong. If you haven't already, try some temp agencies to see if they may be able to help. They pay very little and it certainly doesn't equal my worth, or yours, but it will be something. As well, reach out to churches and even jobs or day gigs on Craigslist, etc(but of course, be discerning). I just lost my job again yesterday for the 2nd time in 3 months, but still I rise. Start submitting your resumes again and when it becomes overwhelming, take a break and go back to it later. I try for a goal of 2-3 applications per day Monday through Thursday and on Friidays, I only submit them if I feel good about the day. Stay Steadfast, Sir! You will receive a blessing. I'll include you in my prayers, believing that God has already answered for the both of us! Love Yourself Enough To Live To Fight Another Day, King! HAPPY HOLIDAYS, in spite of how it looks!
