How should I answer the ‘desired salary’ question on an application?

This is one of those online application questions that require a numerical value and can’t be skipped in order to proceed. I don’t want to underbid or over price myself but I’m not sure what to list as a desired salary if there’s no starting wage on the job description.

You got some very good replies and I would tell you to Google different national average salary scales and research your city and state. That would atleast give you a range of numbers to choose from. Good luck

Jean,

I agree with Mariah and Kelly to research the range for the position and do not lowball yourself because it could cost be detrimental to you moving forward. Also, check to see what type of degree is needed and if you have any professional certifications, defintely take that into account as well.

I remember being able to use 'open' or 'negotiable' on the application but now you have to put in a ballpark figure. Use an online salary tool like payscale - http://www.payscale.com/ to find the average and negotiate later in the interview rounds.

Jean, I agree with Mariah. Definitely look up the average salary and see what a ball park number would look like for a starting salary.

Hi Jean: It might be a good idea to look up the average salary of the job position you want in your area, and use that to start with. If you're more experienced, use the higher end of the salary scale. Don't underprice yourself just to get an interview - it could cost you thousands if you end up getting the job!
