Trying to get hired in my 50’s
I worked for a Fortune 500 company for several years, laid off. Took employment without benefits to make ends meet, then gained employment with an insurance company, laid off due to sales. Now it’s been close to a year in searching, have gone to several trainings to enhance myself, have done several resume writing workshops, savings are gone and have yet to be hired. I have great qualifications in administrative, etc. even some software IT. Have applied for many jobs within my qualifications. I’m at a lost. Any tips? I’m open....

I was feeling that 10 or 11 years ago I wouldn't be working again but I was hired 3 years ago and I love where I work, I meet alot of people, customer service

You mentioned you were formerly employed at fortune 500 companies, I'm not sure of the industry you were in but the private sector is a little more forgiving when it comes to age, I was the office manager, medical billing specialist, injury/accident report writer & editor and marketing rep of a beautiful chiropractic & physical therapy facility specializing in personal injury with an emphasis on better health for 7 years, I put an ad on Craigslist with my resume and started getting calls in a few days, my reputation is pretty good with most of the injury lawyers in my town, I received a call about a group of emergency medical facilities (8 total)that were thinking of adding Personal Injury Cases (Auto, Slip & Fall and Workers Compensation claims) to their list of services, they all had dental departments but they weren't doing much emergency dental so half of each facility was not being utilized...I few minutes into the conversation and we realized we had shared extensive telephone contact over the years, the guy on the phone was the newly hired director of operations and when he realized who I am I went for an interview and was immediately hired as operations manager. Private sector is more forgiving, I actually prefer older employees because they are more reliable, never calling out because their baby has a fever and the daycare policy is they have to go home.

Try working with temp agencies its a great way to use your skills learn new ones and sometimes the company will keep u on directly

As K.D. posted, age may play a role. I would advise not going back too far in employment history on your resume. Hang in there and keep pressing forward. The right opportunity is there for you.

Anita - since you're 50 age can be a factor but not a reason to give up. The problem could be your resume or search strategy. If you email me your resume, I would be happy to take a look and give feedback. Kdholderman@oppsecrets.com

Write yourself a cover letter and in that letter tell say what you have to offer them

Hi , IT is tough to be looking to get hired when you are almost finished from working. I don't know what to tell you. You have worked your entire life. you should be retired and enjoying what's left in your life. I don't wana sound delicate.but good luck. you should seek employment taking care of children like a nanny.

Did you file for unemployment? They have a jobs listed also. I just applied for one.

Have you tried a Temp agency
Hi Anita. Opening a child care center is the best alternative job you can do. Good luck and GOD BLESS.
