REBUTTALS...FOR A DUMB STATEMENT

There more I think about this, the more my mind comes up with!

INTERVIEWER'S STATEMENT: YOU ARE OVER QUALIFED...the dumbest statement ever made!

RESPONSE: Overqualified as opposed to Underqualified...or are you trying to say you are looking for someone who is Barely qualified. So is that the same as saying that the barely qualified might just have enough skill set to achieve the part of the position that they are already knowledgeable of and possibly not capable of extending their thinking to catch onto the elements of the position they are not familiar with?

INTERVIEWER'S STATEMENT: Well with the pay being offered for the position we just don't think you will stay with us long in lieu of your qualifications.

RESPONSE: Well being that I was aware of the salary being offered prior to the interview, wouldn't you think that would be a decision best left up to me to decide if I've already obviously decided it was acceptable by coming to the interview?

To take it to the next phase of thinking as far as how long they stay; is that not a chance you take with the underqualified or barely qualified as well. With all due respect once the under or barely qualified; assuming this does occur, mastering the position that is; is it not possible for either of one of those two individuals to find a better opportunity. Even more so, one in which they originally would have preferred before they knew everything the job entailed. Or even worse terminated because they were unable to master the position. Wouldn't you say in your expertise that does happen?

I am just saying in the bigger picture how dumb that statement really is...

I don’t agree with the statement but I have learned to understand why managers take caution with these type of hiring decisions. I understanding originates from my own personal experience. Everyone manages being unemployed and job searching differently. The typical emotional reactions the average seeker experiences after a long period of time unsuccessfully trying to land a job are fear, doubt, and hopelessness. At this point we’ll take anything! We find ourselves compromising over everything that’s important to us, (pay, job duties, benefits, career progression). The only thing that matters is Finding a Job!! I’ve been there and I’ve made that mistake far too many times.

The new job “honeymoon” feeling wears off quick and my first though is “what’s next?” Unfortunately, not too many jobs today have career tracks options or managers skilled enough to manage talent. It’s too easy to find oneself working the same challangeless for years and feeling frustrated over not being able to advance but not motivated enough to go out and look for another job.

Employees that get to this level unconsciously start to walk themselves out of job, (bad attitude, unengaged, tardiness, lack of care). I’m sure you’ve heard it before… “I was a loyal, dedicated, hard worker for years and they fired me go for no reason.” Today, I interpret the term ‘Over-qualified’ as you have a strong aptitude to perform this job but we’re probably never going to be able to offer you anything bigger so we think it’s your best interest that you find a more challenging job with career potential.
