Bonus?

Ive been at a job for the past 4 years. Every year around Christmas time they give a bonus for the year. I have never worried before about wether or not I would get one. I have a strange feeling this year that its not going to happen. The business from what owner has said has not been doing as well as previous years. They have cut overtime as well as other small things they used to do for employees. I dont believe they have to give a bonus but should they have given a heads up if it wasnt going to happen this year? I feel like clark griswold right now waiting and im going to be enrolled in jelly of the month club lol.

Heck early this year I expected my bonus when I had my review in February my boss told me that I was not getting my bonus (a bonus of anywhere between $20K to $40K) since I was not going to get a good review. This was the 1st bad review I had ever had in the past 30 years. Then on a fabulous follow up in October I was let go even though I was going to be over plan by $1.2MM and therefore eligible for a bonus this next review. Spent 10 years with this company and he made me loose all bonuses in order for him to get a raise since he brought down expenses.

You should feel lucky to have gotten bonuses at all .. One year I got a little box with 2 chocolates in it .. After 20 years of getting that, I would have a whole box !

You need Randy Quaid to come to your aid! But seriously, it is "off-putting" when the company doesn't make some formal announcement about bonuses. They are not obligated to pay a bonus, but if it is an accepted "perk", then I think there should be some time of announcement about it. I've worked at companies that offered bonuses and I pretty much put it out of my mind, but it certainly was nice to receive the extra income (particularly around Christmas time).

Grant's? Might be a common practice, but I doubt that there's any rule that says that management needs to give out bonuses. Employees are supposed to receive raises each year for a job well done, & we both know that incomes haven't generally been rising with expenses.

Oftentimes, employers don't disclose every detail of the company's health to avoid insider trading or in this case, a panic. A bonus is great, but it's only icing. Focus on the cake.
