I know that employers can't ask how old you are but when they ask you what year you graduated from high school or college doesn't that give them a pretty good idea? I have had some interviews in which I was very qualified for but that is where it ended. I know this is age discrimination but I guess there is nothing that I can do. Any thoughts?

Terry, I caution people about taking this attitude. It is not healthy and can hinder your job search process. Do some research on the companies you want to work for, take a look at the age of their workforce (picture of employees on the website is a good start). I am sure that you are very qualified for any job that you apply for. Remember the key, as a job seeker, it is your job to make the interviewer feel comfortable with your skills and abilities. You may have shared too much information, which has the same effect as not enough information. Stick to the available job description as your scope of reference and do not go outside of that. When responding to questions tell a short story about when you performed that particular skill and the results where appropriate. Sometimes when we know we are qualified to can we tell to much. Most employers are not looking for the A candidate, they are looking for that C candidate, the best person for the job rarely gets the job and that is a fact. You can avoid the question altogether by offering to provide a copy of your diploma or transcript. It may not be age discrimination, you may have oversold yourself. Stay positive, and do a self-evaluation of your interviews and I am sure you will find some answers there. One thing is for sure, experience is not the only thing hiring manager looks for in making a hiring a decision. They are also looking for the right fit. They will train the right fit if necessary.

It's definitely a frustrating part of the job search process. Age discrimination is illegal, but it can be really tough to prove. I've read though that if a company is careless about collecting information that could be potentially illegal, you might not want to work for that company anyway. Here's a great article with a lot of info about sidestepping the graduation date question! http://workplace.stackexchange.com/questions/2525/side-stepping-age-discrimination-with-graduation-year
