The Scales of Education are Tippin'

I read a recent survey that said only 42% of Americans believe a college degree IS necessary. The other half of the population surveyed believe there are many ways to succeed WITHOUT one. I wish I would have read this 5 or 6 years ago before sinking thousands of dollars and years earning a degree that I still haven’t been able to secure a career in. I’m lucky to be working now although within a totally totally different industry. I’m still hopeful to find a job in my field someday but the industry keeps evolving and the job requirements for new applicants continues to add up with more skills and qualifications needed to get hired. I’ve thought about going back to school part time and catch up but the thought of taking on more debt for an insecure future is holding me back. So what do you guys think… Is it worth taking on more schooling and education costs without work experience?

Go back to school part time. Hell yeah, why not? Do it now that you still have interest. Remember going to school to get involved in what you would love to do also presents excellent networking opportunities.

I’ve given up hope trying to get that career job. I’ll take anything as long as the money is right. One looses all of that vision and idealism when supporting a family is involved.

Survey or no survey I still think that anyone able to get an education and doesn’t is missing out on a good future. There’s too many learning options in community schools and online training to get learning, build skills, and get good jobs. Don’t limit yourself and go for what you want until you get it.

I think it really depends on the industry you're trying to go into. I'm currently going to school for Computer networking Technology, and I was just offered a job working for Xbox, and I'm not even out of school yet.

Wow, that's crazy. I do feel like, though, that more and more jobs require you to have a bachelor's degree, or at least an associate's. I'd say keep applying for jobs in your field, maybe look for some volunteer opportunities, and go to networking events where you'll meet people in your field.
