Frustrated, confused and unemployed
I have been looking for a job for over a year and a half now. I got laid off almost two years ago. I have more than 10 yrs experience as an administrative assistant supporting high ranking military personnel and SES Government Executives. Trying to turn negative to positive, I thought about what kind of work I wanted to get into, this was my chance to work on a career of choice vs working just to pay bills. I have always been interested in the hotel industry so I decided to take a few courses in hospitality. I have earned my certificate in ServSafe, Customer Service and START (skills task & results training). I have been applying to hotel chains and hospitality companies but don't seem to be getting anywhere. There are 3 things I can think of that may be the reason. 1. no college degree. 2. My age ( I'm pushing 48). 3. I am hard of hearing - interviews these days start with phone interviews which I don't do very good at especially when I'm nervous. I get emails from companies who ask if I'm interested in "letters of intent" which means they are bidding on a contract and would like to use my resume. I think my resume is attractive enough to get emails and calls from recruiting agencies but once forms are filled showing birthdate or I go through phone interview. I don't hear from them again. Comments/ suggestions?

Hi Mia, I understand your frustration because I was in almost the exact same position as you a few months ago. I noticed that applying for first time job opportunities after a career change requires a careful manipulation and resume crafting to get notices, especially if you're banking on online applications. You have to get those keywords down and make them ring on you application to get a call back but even then chances are slim. Related educational background is good but employers are looking for work experience and more importantly a candidate that fits their company culture. Age is something that I've learned not to worry about because I have no control over that. Presentation has been the key to my employment success. This year I started to aggressively get myself in front of hiring decision makers and it's payed off. Look for Career/JobFairs, State/City Workforce Solution Centers, and Networking opportunities for better job search results. Hope this info helps... good luck
Good morning Mia, I'm currently dealing with much the same thing. I will soon be 48 and had a stroke last Oct. which caused me to leave my job. The reply from Ralph is really on point too. You should also check with Vocational Rehab, they will also help you find employers that will make the necessary adaptions for your challenges. I'm working with them now and they can also help you return to school in need be. Good luck and keep the faith.
