Boss has an issue with my hours

I like to come into work at 8 and leave right at 5. My boss doesn't. I get all my necessary work done in that time so there's no reason I shouldn't leave when I do. However I'm worried my boss and everyone else is going to think I don't want to work or losing interest in the job. How do I deal with this?

Sigourney PhD who didn't leave any place to leave replies... All I can say is I am glad I don't work for you or with you. I have my masters and some credits towards my PsyD. If you don't understand slang I am sorry but I'm afraid you'll have to figure it out for yourself. One thing I learned as I have pursued my post graduate studies PhD does not necessarily mean intellectual or maintaining common sence. And the great ones don't answer face book pages and include their educational degrees. So to quote Shakespeare, "Me think the lady protestest too much". Pull out your Cliff notes.

YOU are the employee but not for too much longer I imagine with the attitude you are exuding. Boss means 'In Charge' 'Able to Hire and Fire at Will when circumstances allow'.
What you like doesn't have any place in the work environment. Forget this and you will be collecting unemployment benefit, and your work record scarred for life. Grow Up little girl. Sigourney Richmond-Darbey Ph.D Cantab Employer for 25 years

Erika, Never confuse activity with productivity. Believe it or not there are people that do very little during the normal work day and all of a sudden there is a ton to do at 430 and "have to stay" I have a name for these people but it is a family show. If you are hourly it should not make a difference. As a salaried employee it is job or project based and are sometimes required to stick around. if your work is being done at a high level and none of your projects or assignments go past deadline because of you there is little to worry about. A little known fact for all salaried people. Unless it is negotiated and fully spelled out about your contract the salary is generally for about 44 hours a week. Should they demand that you work 10-12 hours a day for a "salary" find out what that comes to hourly.

Do what your boss wants. You like the paycheck, right? So, become a litle flexible!

From an HR perspective .... what hours were you hired for? Are you hourly or salary? That alone will determine the best answer. However, you should talk to your boss. Ask him/her if your hours of 8-5 are working for him/her.

My first comment is to Ilsky Miami...what is the world did you even say?? Read it three times and it was totally nonsensical. Erika your boss sounds like a typical bully wanna be. Best suggestion is at 5 ask him if there is anything he needs help with before you leave. I would NOT do this daily or you will certainly be expected to stay daily but if you ask 2-3 times a week it will be obvious you are willing to help if needed. Good bosses are difficult to find.

Discuss with your boss. Let him/her know the reason of your preferences.

Have you tried actually talking to your boss about it? Do you have family obligations that require you to be punctual after work? Has your boss expressed discontent in your work or your schedule, or is this just perceived fear on your part. Get it out in the open.

Ericka. Once you begin staying over to help out co-workers, then, they will deliberately NOT complete their work; knowing that you will stay to help them. Nine times out of ten, the people who are not finishing their work, are no-doubt goofing off during the day while you are working. I guarantee it 99.9999 percent.
