I'm a little dumbfounded (if you can call it that)

I just had an "interview" over something called "hangouts"..it was for a customer service and admin assistant position.. When I was emailed by someone from this company I could tell that their writing was on a first grade level to an extent OR English wasn't their first language..whe I emailed back and stated that I didn't have the app hangouts downloaded on my iPad or phone I asked for a second way to interview they replied back with the same thing not really giving me a solution because I didn't want to add anything else to my phone or iPad.. So I did anyway and contacted the person I was supposed to..interview/chat went ok and I didn't feel it was a scam UNTIL they wanted bank info..I'm not a fan of giving out my personal bank info to anyone if it's not apart of the hiring paperwork that's in person not online.. He stated "what's your bank name" I very politely told him I wasn't comfortable Give him that information online in that setting (but had it been face to face and I was hired already and doing hiring paperwork I understand that's part of it which is ok it's legal) he stated that he only needed the name of the bank when I asked what for he said "so we can pay you" and I said "you just told me that you would send me a check in the mail you don't need my bank Info for that".. He said "I just need the name of your bank" sorry dude I still don't give out that information online to someone I've never met in person I've been scammed out of thousands before, not doing it again.. My question is this: how do you know when it's a "scam" or a ligitimate interview over the net or phone?? How and why are websites like ziprecruiter (where this Job was posted) able to post "scams"..how do I handle situations like this?? Help!

theres a lot of businesses that do use hang out and other apps even MLM use it but they never ask for the info over the phone unless theres a business transaction and eve then they use a website for you to field a application or buy a product usually when company use a website or a skype or even a ap such as whatsapp or hangout usually that's the first interview to even send you to a web page with more info or a face to face interview or if is a long distance would be a combo of a app a web and a phone call if a company ask for money at time the already told you is a business opportunity usually the better company are part of dsa the bbb and other government agency that protect you and them but they're clear about it from the moment the interview start if its a corporation who hire salespeople customer service est they won't ask and even both mlm and corporated company would only ask that when you filed a APPLICATION ONLINE

NO COMPANY OR MULTILEVEL COMPANY WOULD ASK IN THE RARE OCCASION THAT HAPPENS ITS A ROOKIE BUT EVEN THEM THEY GAVE YOU INFO OF THE COMPANY AND BACKGROUND THAT YOU CAN CHECK

BLOCK THEM ON THE APP BLOCK THEM ON YOUR PHONE AND EMAIL ASAP

I HATE SCMERS IS ONE REASON PEOPLE HATE SALE AND MULTILEVEL BECAUSE THEY USE %OR THERE STYLE AND DO SHADY THINGS MAKE PEOPLE THINK THAT IS BAD TO GET INVOLVED IF THEY GAVE YOU NAME OF THE COMPANY RESEARCH THEM AND REPORT THEM TO

BBB DSA THE BOARD COMMERCE AND THE TRADE COMISSION

Katie, this is the typical overseas method of stealing from the already downtrodden. This type of scam is quite easy to identify. English is clearly not a first language. The pay and perks are incredible and little to no experience is necessary. What you unwittingly agree to when you sign up for their "administrative" or "scheduling" jobs is supplying a clean bank account to launder their dirty money and, yes, you will be subjected to criminal penalties and prison time for your "work". The actual criminals are in Russia, China or Ethiopia and are never caught. Do yourself a favor and don't fall for these schemes. You WILL pay for it with both your finances and your freedom. If it sounds too good to be true, it is.

It is..I would just move on to another position.I had the same thing happen to me about a job that required to receive packages, you inspect it and send it off.But they needed an American address, banking info and telephone number.I researched the company and someone else posted a possible scam...that person had changed the email name but kept it similar.I screenshot the email name and scam;sent it to the person. They responded:"I'm confused on your email, I can see that someone has a similar email and I'll make sure I contact my security department"..I told them wasn't interested and no response was stated afterwards. So like you said..no verbal, face to face...DO NOT DO IT AT ALL.

Last summer I was approached in exactly the same manner. Not to profile a certain region, but the job was coming out of India, where many of these scams originate. I was not taken, and when I mentioned that I was concerned it was a scam, my contact person abruptly disappeared. Good luck with your search for real employment. I'm sure the right thing will come your way soon!

Katie, I just started looking on the web for a job too, matter of fact I don't have to "look" they all seem to find me every minute of the day now....glad you have good instincts and got away from that craziness....HEY.... I don't know you but I see a picture of 2 kids on your post as your photo??!! Girl I would take that down as fast as possible!!! don't let strangers into your personal life. Save that for your real friends and family the world of crazy web scammers don't need to see your children's faces......Just my 2 cents from a mom & grandmother who never post personal photos... God Bless, MDF
