Substitute Teacher at Teachers On Call

I was fired Thursday after starting Monday( the adventure lasted three days)

Recently I started working Monday for this company, a private social agency, when I had accepted the position in the weekend. On Monday I got to the office ill and I stayed the whole day with a cold. At work the problems started when the secretary asked me for my documents and I gave her my US passport. She said she wanted my SS card. I told her that passport was sufficient and she told me those were the requirements of state of AZ. I tried to explained again passport was sufficient ( government agencies are supposed to give choice to bring passport or several other documents for E-verify). I noticed secretary was stressed out with me and then she asked me for my driving record paperwork and told me I had to have my car in good conditions. I told her that website address she gave me was not the official one and I would prefer to go in person to the agency to get my records right away or I would have to wait weeks. Secretary got stressed out again and asked me angrily if I was using work hours to go that place ( no sense since in my life I have even volunteered in previous jobs staying late at night ). On Monday strangely the agency owner closed the office at 3:00 PM and wanted me and all the employees out of the office. This was very strange because I had not worked in jobs when they open at 9:00 AM and close at 3:00 PM. The same day I got home and noticed my car's engine was not working well (engine light on) and needed to be fixed; also I took temperature and had fever. My boss called me that day Monday when I got home and asked me if I could be next day early at work to shadow a co-worker at 8:30 AM. I told her I would but I had a fever and my car had a problem and I would stay at home next day. She told me I could miss day. I came back on Wednesday(after I fixed car and felt better))when at 3:00 PM boss closed office and asked everybody to leave the office. I told her I would stay learning more about the job but we had to go and boss asked me to be at work at 9:00 A.M next day. When I got home I got a call from a co-worker saying that my boss wanted her to meet me at 10:00 AM somewhere between the office and my co-worker's home to go to visit a family. I told co-worker boss had talked to me about being at the office at a different hour. Then my boss called me upset saying that she wanted me to meet my co-worker at 10:00 AM and told me angrily I had to be able to adapt to a job and if I could adapt. It did not make sense for me. Next day Thursday I shadowed a co-worker but told her that at the office they should not be asking a client to sign a paper leaving the date in blank (to put it at a later day) and I would be doing it the right way. Then I got a call from my boss to tell me it was my last day because she felt I was not " a good fit" for the agency. I told her although she should have given me a chance to prove myself three months I was not going to keep talking because I thought they had done me a favor... I do not know but I felt the boss was setting me up all the time, spying me or testing me with a dark plan on mind wanting to use their employees. They wanted employees with good cars and completely healthy( even when I wrote in my application that I had a disability). They were not able to pay for TB test, physical, MV records, nothing except for the health insurance.I cannot believe some companies treat workers this way( I am a professional with graduate degrees and no criminal record) and I hope I do not encounter the same experience again. I know about other professional friends who were fired before the second and six month after hired , so I do not know if this is a job trend. What is happening in the job market??? Can employers abuse employees that way? Have you had a similar experience? Thanks.

Absolutely. They can and they do abuse you. Is it a trend? It's prevalent. When so many things aren't right on the first day, it doesn't get any better. Leave it behind and move on. Your gut knew before your brain. You'll know the right job when you're there.

After reading this a few times to get a clear understanding it sounds like you and this agency were not a good fit. While it is odd that she ran everyone out of the office at 3:00, your refusal to submit the requested documentation raises red flags. I don't think your taking a sick day hurt you as much as your refusal to do what was asked of you. If you didn't feel comfortable following their procedures then it's all for the best. Just keep in mind it's an employers market right now. Hope you find something else soon.

A company can do anything. I worked in human services for 27 years..YOU TOLD THEM YOU HAVE A DISABILITY. Take yourself down to ada Americans with disabilities act. They will here your case and determine if they us4d your disability to fire you. It can take 5 years or less but the state will have them on record. Trust me after 2 cars hit me head on at work as a director they had to pay me 100 bucks to terminate me. I sued, i won. But its stressful. 8 sets of lawyers. Over 240.000 i won. But physically i lost. Sometimes you must shut up sbout your disability, nect time when they ask for ss card show it. Even if u know best play the dumb card until ur inside and have shown them your capabilities. No one in social services is correct. They are thieves. The less you say the better. Let them think they are grooming you. But perhaps this job was not for you. To be honest as a director i had to lie on psper about a clients funds when executive stall stole..its a great fufilling job. But not worth it. My college was not worth it. I hope you find better

After reading your post it sounds to me like there was a lot of confusion in that company starting with your boss. The Bible says, “God is not the author of confusion” God is peace and love. God allowed for all of that to happen to you to move you out of there and he’s going to bless you with a job that represents him peace and love. Sooner or later you will hear about that previous job closing down and completely out of business.

I am gathering from your post that this was a position in human/social services, requiring you to have an operating vehicle, insurance, driving record and license in good standing. You don't really "work" for such agencies, you are more or less "owned" by them, and they have little or no tolerance for people (even long time employees), who have the "gall" to get sick, or refuse to work a shift, or who don't drive Mercedes-Benz quality vehicles. Years ago, when I worked for a human service agency, one of my coworkers was fired, because she asked to be reimbursed for damage to the front seat of her brand new car, as one of the MH consumers had urinated in the seat, and it had to be replaced. She was basically told that "was on her", and when she protested, she was canned. Personally, liability issues are too great, and I would never take a job where I had to transport consumers.

It seems you started off on the wrong foot. Bottom line, you came into a new job trying to call the shots. You were asked for required documentation which you couldn't provide and you pretty much argued about it. She provided you with website information to help with driving records (which she didn't have to do) and your thanks was telling her she gave you wrong info. I'm not sure saying she was stressed is correct, more like aggravated and annoyed, and why shouldn't she be. These are things you should have been prepared to provide. Unfortunately for you, you got sick. The timing wasn't good with that, obviously no fault of yours, but making good first impressions is important and personally, unless I was on my death bed, I would've not called out and dealt with it. As far as the car is concerned, if it was having issues on day 1 of your job, it was probably having issues before that and if you didn't have the means to get it repaired, taking a job where driving is part of your daily work flow wasn't a good idea. You had too many issues and probably overstepped your boundaries one time too many. In the end, the impression you made wasn't a good one and the employer didn't feel they could rely on you, or that you were dependable enough for the job. Take it as a learning experience, get your ducks in a row and try again. Good luck !

Too much. I hope both you and the company learn something from this. Next opportunity be prepared and ask pertinent questions before u accept the position. From an employer's view point, u had too much going on and to them it was a flag that u were not a good fit for them. When one dorr shuts another one opens. Good luck.
