I have always been taught that when asked about salary to avoid being the first one to throw out numbers. What is a good response question to get the employer to suggest a range first? Saying negotiable is sometimes too general of an answer.

Good idea to avoid initiating the money conversation. Try to get an idea of the industry average wage for the position with payscale or another online salary tool then you can deflect the question back to the employer by asking “What’s your starting salary for the position?” You’ll get the lower salary range for the position but then you can negotiate to meet your skills and experience.

I've noticed more and more companies moving away from extensive training programs. The expectation is for employees to bring in the skills and learn management/leadership on the job.

I'm always tempted to ask "how much do you pay" but it's a turn off during interviews. The line of questioning seems to change quickly when you bring up money.
