Is my age an issue getting a new job?
I am a veteran software programmer that got away from the industry for about 8 years to pursue management (oh what a mistake that was!). I've gotten re-certified in all of the latest languages for web development including: JavaScript, HTML 5, CSS 3, jQuery, Bootstrap, MySQL, and PHP and I am currently getting certified in the latest releases of Java and Spring. What I have experienced so far is putting out well over 100 applications - and I've had two interviews - which neither panned out. It seemed that both companies were very excited to meet with me after looking at my resume and my web site. I consider myself fairly well spoken, and I hold a degree in biology with an emphasis in biochemistry. So I can say that my experience and public speaking/social engagement are not the issues - and I promise that my hygiene is impeccable. I dressed properly (suit, proper hair cut, and neatly trimmed facial hair). Simply put, I can only wonder if it is my age that is affecting their decision as I am 54. I truly do not understand why this would be an issue as I am in great shape (I lift weights 5 days a week and eat healthy). Just not sure why this is happening. Trying to keep the faith in that the next application that I put out might very well be my stairway to securing another job. One last thing - I was laid off at the end of the year - one of the last ones let go from that company and my previous boss (owner of the company) has even written recommendation letters for me. Can someone shed some light on this for me? Thanks you, Mike

Age Very Much Matters. You are considered too old, in the software industry, by the mid 40s. Id be looking to start my own company, develop your own product, something related to the bio field. Then sell it and retire.

Age doesn't matter.

Mike first off it is not am age related issue. Before you go into that job interview learn the background of the company that you will be interviewing for. Next make a list of questions to ask when the interviewer ask do you have any questions. Such as if today was my fist day on the job what would be top priority. Have at least ten written questions. It is ok to bring in you note book with these questions And you should be ready to answer the interviewers questions as well Check on line for tips on how to do an interview. This will also help you land another carree Good luck

Hey Michael, I don't want to suggest that ageism is non-existent in the employment community but you haven't been on that many interviews to pin point the reason for not getting hired on just one thing. First off, I think that your application to interview ratio is a little low for someone with all your experience, You should look into more resume optimization when you submit applications to get better interview call back results. My understanding has always been that tech companies are progressive and very competitive so they're typically interested in hiring the best fit for their company regardless of age, race, gender, or any of those other illegal limitations. You show a lot a qualities and present yourself well. All you need now are more interview opportunities. Don't let age or anything else about yourself that you can't control affect your confidence and ability to do the job. Stay Encouraged

I think most of the time with age is they're worried you'll either have an issue working under someone or you'll ask for more money than they can pay you. It's good to bring up your flexibility so they know you'll be ok with things. Make sure your salary range is negotiable so you can all find something that will work best.
wow Mike! Have you considered starting your own company? I did and do not regret it. With all your experience you could be an entrepreneur. Best wishes to you!
