Administrative Assistant

Why is it so hard for a woman in her early 60s to get a job for what she has over 35 years experience doing? I have good telephone interviews, great in person interviews and even 2nd and 3rd interviews that go very well, I've even passed background and drug test to only be turned down. I know it is because of my age, I receive response saying they choose someone with more experience

ShaMare's Soulful Desserts,

It seems to a be a combination between age and experience in terms of you being overqualified. As silly as it sounds, it does play a role. Sometimes employers will see this vast amount of experience, and feel that they cannot offer you employment as a result of possible pay scale conflicts. Your experience is worth more than what they might be offering so therefore, it's easier to specify that you're overqualified or the common "we chose a candidate with more experience", including even judging a candidate's general appearance (again, sad but true), and maybe they feel as if the job is too fast paced, and you wouldn't be able to keep up being at your age (yet again, ridiculous).

Another possible issue is that your BG checks may have a flaw in it that you may not be aware of or remember. However, this is not to say that you've done anything wrong, but it's possible they see something that prevented them from offering employment. These days employers not only run BG checks, but they also do credit checks too, and if you're in debt, sadly this can also make the decision for them in hiring you. I personally think it's ridiculous for credit checks but some companies do them. The most you can do if request feedback to inquire more about why you weren't selected, and move on. Just keep trying and stay persistent.

Wow. Definitely is an age problem. One of recruiter/ future employers majors with people with a lot experience is the willingness to adapt and learn. Also, how will you respond to a manger who is younger than you and less experience. When you go into your next interview, bring up your willingness to learn, adapt, adjust and don't be afraid to bring up your age as an asset to the company.
