Age and Relocating

I have been seeking a job as I am also doing freelancing work. I spoke to a cousin who I had not spoken to for a few years. He was so happy in Florida and he encouraged me to just take a look at job market there. I come to find that there are many more opportunities and am thinking to relocate for a few years if I can find a job. Apparently Florida attracts retires and companies in Florida are not so quick to dismiss the idea of hiring older people that are 50 +. My cousin will let me stay there while I get my footing if I do actually relocate. I am thinking outside the box so I do not go nutty about things I can not change like my age.

Hi Michelle Cocco, I am a born and bred Floridian. I've been here all my life, Central Florida to be exact. Here lately the areas surrounding where I live has really began to Boom as far as residency. With more and more newcomers to the area it definitely creates more jobs however it also raises the cost of living especially involving housing. The average monthly rental payments are between 12 to 1500 a month, and that's usually for a two-bedroom apartment. It is cheaper to buy a mortgage instead, however you have to have a nice down payment and then adding closing costs, taxes, insurance, appraisal, home inspection, etc. Not to mention your credit score has to be in excellent condition. Also because Florida is a peninsula which attracts hurricanes, homeowners and renters insurance is slightly higher than those of northern states. I am 53 years old, and I have two bachelor's degrees and a creative writing diploma and I have been out of work for a year. All of the positions in my fields of study that pay well have all told me that I don't have enough experience for the jobs applied for. All of the entry level positions I've applied for have told me that I am way overqualified. The average income to cost-of-living ratio is extremely unequally yolked. I apologize if I sound negative, however I wanted to inform you of certain things so you will be prepared and know in advance what you're looking at. Good luck to you and I hope everything works out for you.

We also just moved from Florida due to the high cost of living. Most of the job opportunities are in the big cities and not much in the rural areas.

I just moved from Florida, there's so many job opportunities there, but the cost of living is ridiculously high.

Thinking outside the box is great michelle cocco . And there are very few times in our lives when we can just move somewhere, and begin anew. I find it refreshing - a new start, new city.

Here's hoping that it works out for you. Definitely start applying to jobs out there - you never know what you may find!

Have you tried using the job search tool here on Jobcase?

Just follow these steps!

1. Click on Jobs & Companies at the top of the page, or head over [here] (http://www.jobcase.com/jobs/search)

2. Enter a job into the search field where it says Job Title, Keywords, or Company.

3. Add in your location by filling in your City and State OR zip code. Then click the magnifying glass to search.

4. Once the list is up, click on “View Job" of any you are interested in and then apply.

Wishing you the best of luck with your job search!
