Hello Amanda Have you considered a Diesel Mechanic Apprenticeship? Each year the [US Dept. of Labor] (https://www.dol.gov/featured/apprenticeship) issues state, local, and corporate grants meant to offer alternative training programs within important industries demanding human resources. These programs offer candidates a combined hands on experience and classroom training. Programs vary in length but average (3-5) years. During that time you will earn a salary but your pay increases as you progress in the program. It’s a great option to earn the education, training, and certification without having to pay for expensive training and going into debt. I search the Virginia Department of Labor and the Diesel Mechanic is an approved Apprenticeship in the state so that means programs are available. Now, please note that those programs are very competitive and require that interested candidates pay careful attention to application, testing, and orientation deadlines and dates. So please make sure you're willing to commit to the challenge before you begin. I’ve include resource links below to get you started on everything you need to know. Best of Luck. What a cool career path! Have you gone through a training school to be a diesel mechanic? That's probably the best place to start, as you'll pick up even more skills and make connections with future employers.
