Age Discrimination
I know how frustrated you must feel. My husband was terminated after being a General Manager for 12 years. He was 63 years old and he had stellar reviews for 12 years. The only reason he was given for his termination was that they wanted to go in a different direction. Even though my husband was terminated for no reason we were told by an attorney that he had no grounds for an age discrimination lawsuit. He spent 3 years trying to get employed and although the search committees were always very impressed with his resume they always hired the younger candidates. He had 40 years of experience in his field but age always trumped experience. Because he is a very healthy and an active person he got a part-time job that pays a fraction of his previous salary. If someone can explain to me how to get around age discrimination when trying to find employment, please share.

I understand exactly the way you and your husband feels. I had just turned 50 this year. I feel like I'm capable enough to do a job, some these jobs I can do blindfolded. As I'm sure you and your husband can. Normally I would go to some interview and the question that is asked by an interviewer is "Was there any time that you helped make your company exceed expectations?" Normally this is a gatekeeper type question. It's as if, your supposed to go into the deepest recesses of your memory and give them some answer out of the blue. I often get dumbfounded by that question. If I really wanted to be a smartass about it, my Irish humor would want to kick in. Something on the order of "Oh Yess, It was on May 31st Nineteen Hundred and NInetyfour, a day that would be burnished in my mind till the day I die. I was working at the Daily Planet.I was working along side Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane and I heard about a 30 story building on fire nearby and I ducked into the phone booth and changed into my SuperMan outfit and saved everybody trapped in that building!". Now I know that wouldn't make sense to anybody but neither is having to be asked questions like that especially the interviewer can see my resume and see that I have 15+ years of Marketing in Hospitality/Vacation Resorts experience. For me to remember any time when I helped my company exceed expectations SHOULD NOT be a qualifying question to ask. I am also cross-trained in a lot of other jobs that should NOT disqualify me from the job that I am seeking. Evidently , they want someone who just rolled out of college or high school and pay them as little as possible. I would think most companies would be delighted to have someone in our age group to work for them.

I had to do early retirement and took a cut of almost five hundred dollars a month forever! The situation is what it is, if you resigned or get terminated your only option is early retirement and a part time job or not to exceed 27,000 a year........That is life after 50....

Yes it stinks i gave 12 years to a company i am 56 got fired cause i refuesd to work 24/7 tjat was a year ago and im still trying to get hired. I feel your pain

I'm in the same boat. My career as a graphic artist with AT&T ended when they sold the entire division to a company in India. Now I'm 61 with almost 40 years of experience in advertising and cannot find a job. I gave up and am unemployed--thank God my husband is employed! I removed all references of age and time on my resume, but most companies ask what year you graduated on their "employee application forms." Once I turn that in I never hear back from them.

sorry in the same boat just keep paddling--- it really sucks

Faith in Yah is the only way to get around that. They will pay for their arrogance. Truth be told we all are going in that direction without fail. Then they will reap what they sow. In their arrogance they may not even recognize why it is happening to them. The fools don't realize aging is something no one can escape, unless you are dead. So it shall be done.

I feel the same thing is happening to me. I lost my job of 22 plus years three years ago due to business changes within the company. I took the last 3 years off from corporate to give a go at Catering. Now that I'm on the search for employment I've really been having a hard time. I have 17 years of management and 22 plus years in customer service with a utility company and at this point I can't even get a CSR job. I'm 53 years old and I'm beginning to think my age is the problem. The only companies that's calling me right now are in Sales and I have no sales experience at all. I feel your frustration and I wish they didn't ask birthday or race on applications. We all know age discrimination problem, but we can't take our feelings to court without proof. We just have to keep doing our part and have faith that God's word will prevail over all. What God has for us is for us. God Bless

Age Discrimination. I am in the baby boomer generation and have figured out that the only way any of us are going to get back into the work force on a professional basis, is to band together. I am in M & A and LBO's. I have years experience in these fields and other finance specialties. We should form groups, leverage our remaining assets and "Buy" companies. We have to work as an owner. I am willing to work on a team of other baby boomers with senior management experience to make this week. This is one option. Those that have assets remaining should consider this for themselves. Another observation: We should start a national organization of baby boomers and become more vocal in our "demands". We are taking things too calmly. It is time to organize and force the issue. I will work in either venture Best, Arthur Viola, New York City. Onewallstreetn@aol.com
Linda, I am sorry that your husband was terminated for no reason, this happen when you work with companies that states in their policies "Employment at Will" but! by law, depends on the state law, companies should give him a written notice of termination, I will suggest that he contact the Human Rights Commission of his state and get some legal advice.
