Everything I do, I believe in challenging the status-quo. I believe in thinking differently. It's my WHY.

I am an individual who can walk into chaos and create order, I can invent, connect, create and make things happen. I bring my whole self to work, I engage in tasks that require maturity and soul and personal strength, and doing it for the right reason. I bring humanity to the work, I don’t leave it at home. The hard work isn’t lifting or shoving or sharpening. The hard work is being brave enough to make a difference.

For me, it all starts with clarity. You have to know WHY you do WHAT you do. If people don’t buy WHAT you do, they buy WHY you do it, so it follows that if you don’t know WHY you do WHAT you do, how will anyone else?

When a company communicates their WHY, what they believe, and we believe what they believe, then we sometimes go to extraordinary lengths to include those product or brands in our lives. When a company can clearly communicate their WHY they become markers or symbols of the values and beliefs we hold dear. Those products and brands make us feel like we belong and we feel a kinship with others who buy the same things. When our decisions feel right, we’re willing to pay a premium or suffer an inconvenience for those products and services. This has nothing to do with price or quality. Price, quality, features and service are important, but they are the cost of entry in business today.

However, if your WHYs and their WHYs correspond, then they will see your products and services as tangible ways to prove what they believe.

Look for a common problem, create the solution, market and sell the product: Example #1

I was working as a Broadcast Engineer at WPBF-TV in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, when I discovered a common problem among video and audio production and post-production professionals: They all had a common problem with storing, and managing their rapidly growing inventory of video and audio cassettes. Storage Shelving systems that were available in the marketplace were only available in standard sizes and would not fit in their available spaces, also they did not fit the Height/Width/Depth of their cassettes, they were super heavy and they cost way too much.

As Founder of Arraytech Systems, I created solutions for my new customers by custom designing light weight, scalable Video/Audio Cassette Storage systems that, allowed them to easily manage and control their inventory within their available spaces while saving them time and money. I personally consulted with each customer to identify current and future needs, while introducing new products and solutions that would improve productivity and increase revenue.
I designed my shelving systems and rolling carts, etc. on the drawing board, selected the material, assembled, marketed and sold them to, IBM in Boca Raton, Florida, and expanded to major Broadcast Video/Audio Post-Production companies in major markets throughout the United States.

Find a common problem, create the solution, market and sell the product: Example #2

I was working as a Broadcast/AV Installation Technician for Human Circuit, a Top-tier AV/Broadcast, design, build company in Gaithersburg, Maryland. I was assigned to install an, $80.000, 3-camera digital master control system inside a High School student television/journalism studio. After rolling the system into their master control room and connecting it, I looked through the glass window separating the control room from the studio and discovered, what I later realized was a common problem among all High School journalism, television departments, in multiple school districts throughout the country. The studio was just a cinder block wall, concrete floor, and maybe an old curtain. My question was, why would you spend, $80,000 on technology only to record aspiring broadcast journalism students resumes that introduced them to the industry in such an unprofessional setting? I met with teachers and students and we co-designed a beautiful broadcast set and anchor desk environment where they honed their skills and produced a professional resume.

As Founder of The Forrester Design Group I created custom made products from the drawing board to selling them to The Virginia Department of Education, radio and television broadcast stations and multiple school districts.

Find a common problem, create the solution, market and sell the product: Example #3

I was working as the Director of Creative Services at Marcus Advertising in San Angelo, Texas while producing, directing and promoting a live theater production at the local civic theater. Earlier, I was fortunate enough to be selected by the Playwrights of an original Musical Comedy that debuted in Houston, Texas and became an instant hit. The playwrights allowed me to produce, direct and promote the musical whenever and wherever I had an opportunity. I was invited to stage the musical at the, Angelo Civic Theater as their summer musical. To make a long story short, it was a smash hit resulting in record ticket sales for the theater.

My success was noticed by the San Angelo Symphony Society.

As Manager/Marketing Director of the San Angelo Symphony Society, I created a very aggressive advertising sales initiative, and media blitz with the knowledge that the FCC allows, Non-Profit organization free advertising on all, Radio, Television and Print media outlets in market. I redesigned all concert season brochures, produced new video, and audio public service announcements promoting all symphony special events, booked symphony society members on any, and all radio and television talk show in the market and sold ads in the newly designed concert season brochures. The resulted produced record-breaking advertising sales and my marketing plan resulted in sell-out concerts and record-breaking revenue and ushered in a new era of marketing and promotion for the San Angelo Symphony Society.

This is a great story, Tim! Thanks so much for sharing it with the community. My main takeaway from reading about your path is that you saw opportunity where others saw obstacles. If you can look at problems as places for opportunity, you can find your purpose and develop solutions. That attitude seems to have lead you on a very successful career. I look forward to hearing any other advice you have to share with the community. We truly value your input!
