Age Discriminations?

I have applied for several jobs here that I am qualified for and it appears because I am in my 60's no one wants to hire. How do you overcome this obstacle. I want to work and be productive, do not want to retire so how do you get this across to employers?

At our age and experience most companies do not want to pay you close to what you are worth. If they do make you an offer and it is low, in a short period of time someone will make you a good offer for a short term contract. So they avoid us. We have experienced every type of manager and in most cases we know what they are going to say and do before they can think of it. How many times in your last position did complete a task even before it was assigned? We make them feel insignificant, we know how to do the job that they can not imagine.

Manufacturing Engineer at Eberspaecher Exhaust Technologies

I too have experienced the rejections. However, I think it may also be salary or compensation based. As a senior manufacturing engineer, I am asking for a rate that puts me in the higher end of the scale. I have recruiters call me and say I have a great experience base, but when may compensation expectations are discussed, I get the cold shoulder. They want everything for sub par pay. I would have had a job with the last company I worked for, where I was brought in a a contractor, had I been willing to take a significant paycut. They wanted to pay me less than I was making as a contractor for straight 40 hours with some benefits, and bring me aboard as a salary person, with benefits, but unlimited overtime. I did the math, and even with benefits it was much less. it seems I have hit an income ceiling, as companies do not seem to understand the value in having a senior person aboard.

I wish I had the answer. I am in a similar situation but I am only 44. I recently received my MBA .thanking that going back to school was the answer. I have applied for literally 40 jobs and have not had one interview opportunity. I spent nine years working in local government as a social worker, mediator and then as their Training Specialist. I thought of starting my own business but that takes money. I want to help my family and be a contributing member of society. I have a part-time job that has nothing to do with my career. I am praying and believe that Lord has an amazing plan. I just have little patience. God Bless everyone's job searches.

Edward do not give up your goals. I have learned that people are afraid of the unknown, the unknown here is your ability to achieve the job description. Therefore, you have to sell yourself per se. Let them know your experiences, skills, and knowledge BUT at the same time try not to give to much information just do enough to catch their attention. Illustrating that you are a go-getter no matter the age.

Edward, hello! Maybe it's time for a re-invention of self; sometimes we have to sit and think about the direction we are going in and decide if it's the direction we desire to proceed. Set some time aside to take inventory of your life and apply what you discover to your future; ask yourself if the two coincide. If you find that your desires and the actual state of your being isn't lining up, then contemplate what you can do to make the two meet. Maybe you can explore your educational opportunities; sometimes reinventing simply means adding value to self. I agree that sometimes there is an age bearer; however, there are other times that make us face the realness of our inability. Maybe it's time for you utilize your skills or build on your skills, to begin a new venture. Robin

I am in total agreement with you. Regarding age discrimination is live and prevalent! In talking with numerous of employees throughout my daily shopping venues. Most of the young adult have either just graduated or about to ! And through me filling application they always say I don't have enough experience. At least I can count change without a calculator or cash register.
