Getting your career started in Georgia

How can I jump start my career in my home state? In Georgia it is not what you know but whom you know. Despite my education, experience, clean background, and pretty good credit. I am struggling getting a management job. I have been on many interviews but I am told I am over qualified or do not have the experience they are looking for in a candidate. I have been on so many interviews were the interviewer never knew I have Master's degree until I was setting in front of them. Many employers like my cover page and never read my resume until we are face to face. I have had five employers tell me I have a higher degree than them. My mentor tells me to dummy down my education; but to me this is lying. And many companies do a education background on their candidates. So I feel lost at times as if been educate is a curse instead of a blessing. I am currently pursuing a PHD in Public Health /Community Services so that my options can get better I hope. I am thinking of relocating once my last kid graduate from high school and go's off to college in 20 months. Many of my classmates and professional peers thinks my name is the problem. They think my name is not getting pass HR rep and resume is ending up in the trash. I personally think it could be my resume. So I am in the process of getting it professionally done. So job casers what do think?

Hi, Aisha! I'm sorry that you're having this experience. I've only had experience looking for jobs in New England, however depending on the industry you're looking in it can be very similar here to what you describe. What kind of managerial positions are you looking for? I think having a focused search and an equally focused resumé can really help boost your success rate for interviews and call-backs.

I don't call it "dumbing down" a resumé, I call it tailoring. You're not trying to make yourself look "dumber" by removing some information from your resumé, you're trying to show a potential employer that you're a perfect fit for their job by removing any info that isn't really relevant to that position. This requires that you really study the job description and edit your resumé often to suit different types of jobs. Hope this helps and good luck in your studies!
