A question was asked of me, "What are the pros and cons of seeking employment as a person with a disability"? Great question. First the pros. There are employers in the U.S. called Federal Contractors. These companies work with the federal government. Because of that, there are compliance requirements that they must meet for their workforce. Once of those requirements is to have a workforce made up of 7% of people with disabilities across all job descriptions. This is not a mandatory requirement but there are consequences if the employer does not at least attempt to meet that quota. In this instance, it it beneficial to be a person with a disability looking for work at a company who is a federal contractor. There are lists out there of federal contractors. You can Google federal contractors to find employers near you. If you disclose to these companies that you are a person with a disability, more than likely, you will get a look. Remember, employers will always hire the best qualified candidate. Remember, only answer questions asked. Do not offer more information than you need to.
Cons: If you are looking for work from a company who is not a federal contractor, unless you need an accommodation, you should not in my opinion disclose your disability as from my experience it may hurt your chances.
