Trying and Failing

I have been unemployed for the past three months and I became increasingly discouraged after losing my home and car from not being able to pay for them any longer. However, I have not given up and I’m still continuing to look for a job. I have am very young but I do not lack experience. I have worked as a legal secretary, a customer care representative, and an assistant. I also have attended College and am very close to obtaining an associate degree. The trouble is that I continuously have been denied a job for unexplained reasons. Each one has contacted me for an interview and each one has told me that I was not a “good fit” for the position. I am wondering what I can do to improve my chances?

I agree with Jamie, Charles, and Glenn: vocational school or freelance. Also are you following up and thanking the interviewer by summarizing your learning points and asking the specific reasons you weren't hired. One thing I ask is "What training could I take to better fit the position?"

Never give up and keep going. Perhaps check at the college you attended for financial aid and work opportunities.

I encourage you to get a 4 year degree in business administration and then pursue an intern program.

If not college, pursue a good trade such as working as an apprentice electrician for a private company sponsored by your county vocational program.

Your local Electric power company probably also has apprenticeship programs.

There is also the military to consider. The active duty Air Force would be best. Also, your local Air National Guard (2 weeks active duty per year) has excellent training and free travel depending on your specialty of training.

Learn a trade by going to votech. If your under 21 than it is free! College these days are way too expensive. You can get a certification for Hair, Electrical, nursing, etc. etc. A college degree does'nt guarantee you anything. A votech certification will guarantee you a well paying job within a year and a half.

I have been unemployed for 5 months. I have 8 years of experience in my field. I too lost my home and had to move in with my parents. I have periods where I get interviews and periods like now when its nothing. Most of the jobs I've interviewed for they have all told me I'm overqualified. I'm broke and have no job prospects. So I understand your pain. Its beyond frustrating and I'm severely discouraged. I have a great background in my field with education and I'm still without a job. You are not alone...I pray it gets better for us both and anyone else who is struggling...

If you live near where there is a company with a large customer service center like a phone company or electric company, you will be able to work on the phone in their customer care center, and apply for other positions within the company in 6 mos. to a year. If you do a good job, get to work on time and have a perfect record without a bunch of sick days you can grow from within as you gain more education.
