Warehouse Worker with Experience

How can I turn a seasonal job into a permanent position?

I took on a seasonal warehouse job with Amazon in November and last week they started letting seasonal workers go but I want to stay on. I’ve been a good worker… no absences, volunteered to work overtime when needed, and always completed my work on time. I want to approach management about a full time position but I’m unsure how to sell my value to the company.

Alan along with the other comments there is nothing wrong with asking them about staying on as a permanent employee. That's the sad thing about seasonal work, you needed a job more than likely you got on during the holiday madness, and once things have slowed down, and the pace is a bit more chilled they began to cut people, which is the reason people shy away from such jobs. Once upon a time companies would keep you on because they liked your hard work ethnic, outgoing personality, excellent attendance, but it is very rare now to stay on. I realize the things I've said may sound rather bleak, but here's a thought. You're still there as of your post, you may not get let go, but if they do call you in then mention to them that you realize that maybe most people were let go due to the slow pace and they no longer need so many employees full time, but maybe you could work part time there, and get another job else where, it's an option. And just as soon as you do get the second job, they just may decide that they want you to stay on full time after all. Such things do happen, don't panic, just offer to them your pt offer instead of being cut completely, if they say no go, then there are plenty of warehouse jobs ready to let you in. This place will want to call you back during the madness again, but hopefully you will be gainfully employed elsewhere, and fully content.

I agree with many of the other comments. One thing to add, don't stop with letting your manager/supervisor know you're interested. Speak openly about it to all managers, supervisors and leads. Your manager, supervisor or lead may not get the job done but there could be another who can and wants to.

From your information that you have presented here would be an excellent way to market yourself to your employer or future employer. You make a good argument what you have done at Amazon that would get you a position with them. Keep pursuing forward and you will get hire somewhere if not Amazon.

Its usually based on the companies requirements that they set upon the employees, like I worked seasonal at jc penny and depending on how your social, sales and promoting skills were, you were kept permanent. So approach a manager or a supervisor and talk to he or she about wanting to stay permanent, no need to explain yourself more besides being a hardworkee and staying dedicated.

Most of the seasonal jobs have already been laying off or cutting hours. I hope you were able to stay on Alan.

These companies, mainly retail, have already started laying off their seasonal help so don't put off more time to ask about a F/T job. There's going to me more competition added to the workforce next month.

speak openly with management about the possibility of post-seasonal employment. Create a case for yourself by expressing your successes throughout your time on the job, as well as explaining why you’d make a valuable long-term addition to the company.

Hey Alan, It doesn't hurt to just ask you supervisor about a permanent position but don't put it off for too much longer especially if their already letting people go. Also, check the company career page for open positions at that location and find who you can speak to directly about those opportunities.
