Overqualified

Hi, my name is Morris and this is my first post. I'm 68 years old and have worked as a programmer for the past 35 years. I recently decided to stop because of health reasons. I'm doing some volunteer work, and it would help if I could earn some money, but every job I apply for they tell me I'm overqualified because of the work I did before. Any ideas?

Hi Morris, This happened to my dad recently, who is also a programmer with 30+ years of experience. He found success 2 ways: working with a temp agency (they have established relationships with companies, so they can be the go-between) and - if going directly - telling the employer up front that you 'want to try something new.' The latter works because if you explain you'll 'have to (essentially) start from the beginning because the new job is unfamiliar', it makes more sense to the employer that you'll start fresh & be in a mindset to learn. Hope this helps!! (It's still not easy - keep plugging away at it!)
