I have been a paid volunteer for 6 years - only day a week as a Teacher's Assistant. It is great to fill that blank spot in between jobs as well.

Actually I volunteer for a local aids reasearch center specially during big events. It does look good on a resume because it shows my flexibility. Have decorated for a event that was a $200 a couple, then helped later with making sure auction items got to the right winning bid. I've served hor duvers (excuse my spelling) for other events which shows customer service skills. Most companies as a big business don't usually have volunteers for jobs in an office. Look towards a charity and yes there is a possiblity that it could becoming a paying gig. But even if it doesn't when you go for an interview you can discuss what you have done as a volunteer that would be a benefit for the employer.

I was asked at an interview of all places a walmart give an example of helping someone whether during a working shift or during personal time. As I'm always trying to help someone specially in the parking lot (a mother that has to leave her child in a car seat to put a biggie up) I had a quick answer. As in early that week I was almost to my car with a couple items I had bought when I noticed a lady in a motorized struggling to not drop her French bread. Helping her get everything together and the returning the cart for her. When the hr person hiring me heard my story he was impressed. So you might not being something fancy as a volunteer but it shows different skills that you hadn't thought of, but an employer notices it when you mention it. So don't limit yourself to office or big company to let you volunteer there, think outside the box that's what employers take notice of. As I said you develop skills that hiring mgr takes notice of that you think well it really wasn't that big of deal. Find a charity that is dear to your heart and offer to volunteer. As for me I have a lot of friends that are hiv/aids positive and have lost some dear to my heart due to complications from the disease, so that's my charity of choice.

What's yours?
