How should I respond to an offer with a counteroffer?
I received an offer of 42k for a position in Orlando, FL I really want. This is not a bad salary but the national average according to Glassdoor is 49k. I want to make a counteroffer mainly because I think I’m worth it but I’ll be relocating for this job and living on my own (no roommates) so I’ll have additional expenses if I accept the position. The offer was sent via email along with a salary verification doc. and other pre-employment info regarding benefits. Should I send the counteroffer before returning the salary verification or should I email every back together? I’m unsure how to respond in a way that my counteroffer will be considered. Thanks.

Hi Marcus, First things first, congrats on the offer, that is very exciting. If you think you deserve more money than you were offered, I would ask if you could speak with the person responsible for making that decision. It's always good to speak directly with someone rather than through email. It seems like you have thought of several reasons why you would like to see the offer be upgraded, so let them know that. Be sure to be very respectful and let them know how appreciative you are of them for wanting to add you to their company, but that you wanted to see if there was anything they could do on their end. The main takeaway is to try and speak with someone directly and be prepared to state your reasons for making the counteroffer. Please let me know if this helps or if you have any other questions. Good luck! -Mark
