Age & New Job Search

I am 64 years old with over 30 years of restaurant management, over 20 of those as a GM and I am also a sommelier who has been written about in Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, Food Arts, NY Times and Philadelphia Inquirerer. In those years I had only 5 employers, obviously, I'm not a job hopper. I was laid off after 4 years from my last job as an MOD and Corporate Sommelier of a company with 5 upscale restaurants for "economic reasons", the store I was at, was their lowest performer and was involved in a multi million dollar lawsuit with the landlord and of course, those $850,000 lawyer were charged back to the store and not corporate. Also the GM was a bully with staff and the FOH staff was a constant shuffling because of a toxic environment, but the owner felt since she controlled costs it was ok. I should mention I had worked for the company for 10 years previously, as the original GM of the first restaurant for 6 years and 4 years at the corporate office and helped open 4 more locations around the country. After 9/11, we decided to move from Dallas back to our home city of NYC. I spent the next 10 years at 2 restaurants in NJ and helped win great acclaim for these farm to fork very high end restaurants. At one I won 4 Wine Spectator Grand Awards of Excellence and 2 AAA 4 Diamond awards of which there were only 3 others in the state with that designation. At the other, with 100 seats, we became Open Tables most booked restaurant in the state. After 10 years away, I was contacted by the owner of the restaurants I had previously worked for in Dallas, to see if my wife and I would consider returning to Dallas. After feeling betrayed when laid off, I had to find a new gig because I was not ready to retire. 8 months later, I'm still looking for a job. My resume has been stylized by 2 services and reads incredibly well but many jobs I was perfectly qualified for, I never received a reply or I get a phone or Skype interview, then an in person interview and then nothing. I should say, I'm 64 years old, 5'9", 140lbs, in good health, I still have all my hair with a couple of discreet streaks of gray and I can see my feet when I look down, and I dress with well made suits and jackets in hip and current styles. I am really starting to believe it's my age and many GM'S could be threatened, but I really don't want their job, I want to be a sommelier/MOD/Mentor/teacher/resource for the next 3 to 4 years and then retire. What can I do to get past this situation and find a job I am going to love with great food, interesting wine list, craft cocktails and beers preferably in fine dining or an upscale bistro situation. I have even had a friend pose as a potential employer on the phone and check my past job recommendations and personal references and it seems to to look good on that front. Suggestions, comments, criticisms? .

Hi Jeff: Whoah, your experience looks awesome! Quick question - I don't know where you're currently located, so this advice might not fit, but it could be that the market is oversaturated at the moment? If you're open to relocation, it might be cool to go to a new (and smaller) city to see what's out there. If you're still based in NYC, the competition might be extremely fierce in your job field.
