Leave or stay in my hometown?

at this moment in my life (48years) Iam dealing with what to do move to the states or stay here in my country. Things are really hard here the salaries are really low, the government is in bankruptcy the servies are going up $$$$$$ and I dont know what to do. I have a job as a teacher my wife work as a secretary in a government agency, and we have a life a good life but sometimes we feel the pressure of what is going to happen here. Iam almost 50 is that a thing to be considered if I leave the island? I would like t hear some opinions . Thanks

Sorry you feel this way but I lived here all my life and work is always easy to find.I'm in Florida. Maybe you should move. It's not like you can't go back.

I heard that Texas is always recruiting teacher's from Puerto Rico. I think your time as a teacher now counts towards your pension. They also pay for all your relocation expenses. Look it up and good luck.

Resourceful and Always Willing To Help Others!

Como estas Rafael, I personally never had to make that decision but I have plenty of family members that have. Separation from family and culture is hard choice but a necessary one if you have a responsibility to provide. Gabriella's points are right on but I would encourage you to try to make moves as a family unit and avoid extended time apart.

Hi Rafael,

I'm originally from PR myself, and have now been in the states for about 9 years. Most of my family is still in PR and asking themselves the same questions. I know this isn't an easy thing to think about, but I think it's good to have an open mind when it comes to the future. There is so much to consider when thinking about relocating, but here's a few to start.

First, this is a very large country, and cultures, job markets and living expenses are very different not only by state, but by city. I would do some preliminary research to find out where you'd like to move to or what criteria are important to you when selecting where you might want to live. As part of this, I would do a few job searches in those areas you are considering, to see if those areas would be a place where you'd find employment. Other things to search for are - what are salaries (for your particular job) like in that area and how expensive is it to live there (rent or cost of a home, gas, food, entertainment, etc.).

Second, if you have family and/or friends that have relocated, I would reach out to them to learn about their experience and also get more information about where they moved to and what their experience was moving there. The cultural adjustment can be a bit difficult at the beginning, but it really depends on where you end up moving. When I first moved, I had a hard time adjusting to speaking English most of the time and greeting people with a handshake. Talking to friends and family can give you perspective as to the kind of cultural challenges you might face in a particular location, and whether or not you think those might impact you when you move. Also, note that the cultural challenges might differ with every city, state (and they do!).

There's a ton more to think about, for example logistics (selling your home, finding a new one, etc.) and weather (this one was a hard transition for me), but I think the first step is really to narrow down all the possibilities to a few places and try to find out what living there would be like - what kind of work or job opportunities might you find there and what's the culture of those places. Once you have your preliminary list you can start creating a pro/ con list of moving vs. staying.

Hope this helps! There is so much to consider and best of luck in the decision process - I know it's not easy!

Best, Gabriela
