Why is so hard for a person collecting SSDI who only wants to work 12-16 hours a week? When Any person these days only gets 12-16 hours a week.

Hey, I'm in the same boat as you are. A year ago , before I had to have surgery, I was doing like 18 - 20 hours a week, working in a restaurant. When I was allowed to go back to work, my employer had cut my hours down to less then 12 hours per week. And I have been with this restaurant for over 8 years. And now they have given all of the other employees (some new people too) more hours than me. I don't think that fair. So, I am, too, looking for a different part time job. I don't know how I am supposed to live on that kind of hours along with my SSDI, which is not much, when I have medical bills that I have to pay.

HI DENISE. I hear you on that one. I am in the same position you are. I live in Southern California, Los Angeles area, am 64, but I am on SSI. What it looks like is that almost EVERYONE THESE DAYS IS ONLY HIRING PART TIME especially in retail. I work in retail currently and did have about 22 hours a week at 12.00/hr which was perfect for first several months. Then xmas season came, they hired a bunch of seasonal millennials, and took hours from the rest of us to give to them, I'm sure because they were getting paid less. Then when holiday season was over, my hours went down to 5 hrs/wk, while they kept a lot of the seasonals! And that is the way it has stayed! I seems like when you are only part time they can give you as little hours as they want. This is how they seem to keep their payroll costs down. I have checked around and even Bloomingdales, who used to hire full and part time, now only hire new people as part timers. It is the wave of the future because they can screw you around more legally. Does anyone have feedback on this? Good luck everybody.

Probably depends on where you live. Cities are easier to find PT work. Starbucks baristas usually only work 20 hrs. SS can direct you to the company's that hire disabled workers.
