Would you drive 52.5 miles on way to work for a full time job with great benefits and 60K per/year salary?

Right now I’m working for a pretty good company with great people okay benefits and pay. I got call back for an interview with a utility company I’m very interested in working for but the interview and job opening is in a neighboring state. The average drive time on Google maps is 52.5 miles one way which is roughly a little over an hour commute each way.

My son who is a cardiologist, did his Fellowship at a hospital 1.5 hours away by car. He chose to do the long drive leaving home at 6:30 am so his wife would not have to give up her job which was very close to the excellent day care they had found for baby. Also her parents lived close by so it was easier for him to do the travelling. He did that drive most mornings and evenings for the 3 years of his Fellowship. If you are serious about something you take the plunge. As long as you are still fairly young and fit you should be ok in the short term. If the new employer wants you closer ask about relocation assistance. Depending on your situation you might be able to stay over during the week. Another Of my sons, with a home in Virginia took a temp job in DC and paid $350 per month to share lodgings with friends during the week. It was cheaper than taking the train and less taxing than driving. So think about it! It can be done.

Is there any chance you could move closer. The drive at first would be no problem but after as few weeks would definitely take it's tole. I would not considered (personally) ,that kind of drive unless I had the stamina and extreme patience

A utility company may not be pleased with you living so far away. You should also consider adverse weather which may involving lodging and the inability to be at work when required. You would lose 8 hours or more of your time per week or close to 1 weeks per month. In addition, the wear and tear on your vehicle and fuel cost and maintenance. You may need to get your oil changed every month since the odometer would have 2000 miles per month. I would give consideration to the cost benefit in any decision making. Good Luck

What is the job? And were is this located, I could drive that but if I do not know where that is, like someone else said, it could easily be two hours each way.

No because I do not like to drive that much. Besides I am 5 years away from retirement: what little I have is what I will take into retirement. I am satisfied.

Scott, Is it an increase in pay, responsibilities? You sound excited about the opportunity, so if the geography is the only issue, I say go for it. Once you settle in, you'll get to know the area and maybe moving closer will make sense later.

Hi Scott: Make sure you double-check if it's actual an hour one-way, or if traffic could change that estimate. 50 miles may seem like it would take about an hour, but if you live in a heavily populated area, that could easily double!
