Age Discrimination

Quite a lot of posts on this topic. What I don't understand about age discrimination is what do people think is going to happen as they get older? Will they be eternally 28-35 years old? In essence, people are discriminating against themselves. These young "wippersnappers" will one day face the same issues touted in the many posts on this site. And by that time, it will be too late for them to see what they failed to see when they were 30. It's really sad to think we throw away a vibrant, intelligent, skilled, trustworthy set of our population because they are "old". Like old is a bad word. It's not. I'm proud of my accomplishments and the fact that I have passed my genes onto a second and third generation.

I am a freelance graphic designer. I work from home - anonymously unseen. And that's the way I like it. Not my preference, of course. But it's how I get around (some) of the ageism out there.

The problem is that the SS age has been raised, so what do they expect us to do?

My problem as of late, isn't being turned down for me being over 50, I post for a Job position but never hear back from HR. I would love to get at least a call back saying that they want to schedule an interview. I voluntarily took a layoff in 2012, they phased our department out because the work went to digital Imaging. I worked in Banking previoysly off and on since I was 21, they let four of our eight employee's in my department go, they then called us in the office with a reprieve, they said our Severance would remain on the table for one year, and the option for the layoff, and to collect unemployment. I came to a conclusion that, they didn't do much to train us in other areas, or the neighboring departments, meaning the departments just adjacent to ours, we were all on one floor. I saw the Company as just a Paycheck, in fact, it was the only Job I ever had, where I experienced such a high level of unprofessionalism. It was a place that didn't reward you for using your skills, say you took the initiative to resolve an issue, well, you were damned if you did, damned if you didn't. It was a very clicky place as well, you had the "preferred" employees that were made of Teflon so to speak, everything rolled right off. So, I saw no future there. I then informed my Manager I would be leaving at the end of August, I did so, I worked in New Jersey, lived in Pennsylvania commuted daily. Thought I could apply for State funding to attend School, after all it is offered when you are on Unemployment! I was also in the midst of selling my home in Philadelphia, my House was on the Market since the year before. I said to myself......watch me find a concrete buyer now that I took this Layoff. Well, sure enough, I was now preparing to make this move, this was a good thing, the House was to much for me to maintain, I made an agreement to stay in Delaware with my older Brother till I decided where to move. Now I had to apply with Delaware's Department of Labor and Industry for them to help me attend some sort of Job Training! They literally screwed me out of my opportunity to go to School. Now, im still trying to get a decent 40 Hour a week Job, something that requires my Banking and Customer Service Experience. My intention to attend School is now coming back in to light, I have a possibility that I may qualify for Financial Aid. In the mean time, I need a full time Job in order to pay my bills, and get my little House. I recently began driving for Lyft and Uber. I know people, this is confusing, well it's the most complicated my life has ever been, the worst three and a half years of my life! I came to a conclusion that I would like to pursue a job in the Medical Field, Ultrasound Technician. I just feel like im applying for Work and these HR people just move at their own pace, ive seen it first hand over the years in previous Jobs, our Department was in dyre need, short staffed, our Managers pleading with HR to bring in people for an interview. I try to keep a positive attitude, the days of walking a Resume in and hand delivering it, are gone! We live in a very informal society. Everything is done through the Computer.
