Desperate and Defeated
I just turned 47 and have over 13yrs of progressive HR experience. In the last year I have applied to over 400+ jobs and have had at least 40 job interviews. This last month I have had 7 alone and can't land a job. I'm very depressed and feel defeated. What more can I do? I'm on all the job sites and professional network sites.

You cannot know how much your post has impacted me. You are describing me!!! Although now gainfully employed, it took me a year to land a position!
Let me say first and foremost it is NOT YOU!!. Best thing I did was to slow down and became pickier about the positions I gave my time and energy to.
I know it sounds and feels counter intuitive.but ultimately it will allow you to put a better product YOU! FORTH. Just breath have FAITH in your abilities and in your worth as a quality employee
I am 53 yes old with over 25yrs experience in my field and was stuck between over qualified land and cheaper younger entry level kew to the work force baby professionals.
I hope by the time you read this you have found your job and that you are happy. IT WILL HAPPEN!

Use you HR experience in a non-commercial area. Public schools need HR ; non profit charities need HR, armed forces bases need HR, denominational chruch headquarters need HR, business associations like the American Society , etc need HR. Stop having tunnel vision in limiting your search to just commercial enterprises Remember what Einstein said Insanity is doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results.
broaden your vision

Try adding Equal Opportunity Commission

Benjamin Smith? Is that your real name?

I think many of us could be in the same boat. I know I am. I have be at this for 2 years now. I have picked up freelancing jobs in between but it would be nice to get an offer.
I had an amazing interview today and I am praying that I am offered this. It only takes one application to get ahead of the game and try to stick it out even when it is hard to be upbeat. I just try to think to the day when I am leaving the house at 730am to go to work.

In your various job paragraphs, I see you mentioned working with multiple departments, training managers and rank and file employees, and determining certifications needed but, there are no numbers mentioned. How many departments, 5, 10, 20? How many employees trained? How many classes conducted? And for certifications, maybe estimate the starting level of professional Certs as current (50%?) and then the ending level of increased Certs (80%?); because everybody values factual numbers over vague generalizations.
For example, on a project I led 6 years ago our team replaced 1,790 desktop computers with an estimated value of $895,000 dollars. I did not negotiate the purchase of these but, I managed the implementation of the Refresh effort. #HardNumbers speak volumes.
Also, do you have any skills better than the typical HR specialist? What are your unique skills; something extra that might benefit a business?

At this level I would label you a specialist. Also, with all of that experience, have you considered recrutiing? or consulting? Great luck to you..

I have the same issue. I'm in a higher age bracket but don't look it. I have excellent experience and background and it's been 1 1/2 years that I've been interviewing. Still no job. I keep trying various resumes and cover letters to no avail. I wish you good luck. I am single and this is something I've never experienced before.

Only believe
Hi Steven... you are really not a person to give up...a little more and you can win..I think giving 40 interviews and keeping patience with 400 application is not a child's play.. Don't give up..you will get it ..will chant for you!!
All the best
Warmest
