Math Educator

Former teacher asking for a chance at a new job!

I'm a 28 year old with BA in math education. I've applied to over 30 jobs in the past 2 months for anything and everything from offices, bookstores, libraries, universities, and even retail but no one will hire me. I'm seriously depressed and losing hope. I had a job as an inner city high school math teacher up until last year but I had to leave due to the stressful working conditions. Unfortunately, students routinely brought weapons to school and I'd been threatened and cursed at many times. I honestly don’t think I ever want to go back into teaching again after that experience. Now I’m trying to find a job that I can eventually turn into a career but no one is interested. I can’t understand why no one will give me a chance.

Dawn...teaching has turned into a horrible procession. I did ten years in the inner city and have had loaded weapons presssed agaimst my head multiple timess. My eventual solution was to go into business for myself as a tutor. Teaching as a profession is over. Are you in a position to go to grad school and get a certificate on somethimg medical or technica? A

Math Teacher at Henry County Schools

Hi Dawn, I agree with Karri, I too am in the same boat and burning out quickly. We have been doing all of the job requirements for years in the classroom but it is hard changing careers as a teacher in some areas. Mathematics is a great field and if you are in a small area, you may have to venture out. I won't say, give the classroom another try because we all have different experiences. I am a 20 year vet and have lived in some of the areas but my passion has dwindled. Continue to look and don't give up. It may get frustrating but not worth putting your life on the line for.

...don't give up on teaching. There are schools out there without the same extent of challenges as you encountered. If you are willing to travel further, perhaps more will open up. Good math teachers are sorely needed - don't give up on what you have put forth hard work, time and money to become trained. Keep with your skills and work will come, even if you have to travel further.

Instructor Elem Sec at Raytown Quality Schools

Hello Dawn! As a 30 year veteran, I have come to the conclusion that the regular hiring managers do not know all of the skills required in education today. Data review and analysis teams, district leadership teams, teacher/admin. counsels, book review groups, community outreach teams, and the list goes on and on. The days of standing in front of a class room and lecturing with students taking notes and asking questions, grading papers, writing on chalkboards are over. We use smart boards, laptops, prezi, virtual assignments, and technology.
I am in the same boat as you with 30 years of teaching experience. Any company or organization that has the opportunity to hire an educator will be getting a highly skilled, people oriented, solution based, team player, with a huge capacity to learn. After all, that's what they have been doing for years.

Hi Dawn, Welcome to Jobcase! Your past situation sounds a bit more than stressful! I can understand wanting to get out of that environment. Do remember that it's not like that everywhere, so if teaching is something you are passionate about, keep going!

As far as your other applications, have you tried following up on them by calling to speak with the hiring manager?
