On the up and up

I never was very good at working retail. Didn’t feel like I was going anywhere and just found the dealing with customers to be a real pain, so decided to try something in a new direction. When I applied to a position at coca cola I didn’t really know what a merchandiser did or anything, but I learn quick so it wasn’t an issue in my mind. They asked a lot of good questions but I was ready, only had to think about one or two questions for a sec before responding. Now I’ve been here for a few months and I honestly couldn’t think of a better environment for me. The work is physical and keeps me active and I work alone most of the time. I can listen to music or a podcast most of the time while I get through the day. Some might find it lonely but I love it. The day flies by and I don’t have to worry about dealing with complaining customers or making my bills. I found my spot finally.

Machine Operator at Pepsi

I worked on the other end of what you do at Pepsi. I was a machine operator in production when I resigned my position .That is dirty work I cant tell you how many pop showers I took at Pepsi. It's hot sticky and dusty in the summer .I have seen cans of Pepsi explode and shoot into the air like rockets because the can warmer got to hot .I started as a bulk loader when I was 40 and that's a young man's job. You basicly spend 16 hours a day building pallets of pop for stores and you do that 6 days a week .That takes its toll on a person regardless of your age .I did it for a year and busted my butt .I tore a tendon off the bone in my left elbow at the end of my first year .I ended up having 3 surgeries and ended up having to have my elbow reconstructed and spent 14 recovering .I did go back and it wasnt easy ,Pepsi fired me after I was back a month .They thought they would get away with firing because of my injury but I didnt let that fly .We were union but I got my job back on my own .They filed the grievance with the union I did the rest .I will never lay down and let a employer walk all over me .Pepsi tried and failed..I resigned my position because of another injury I just couldnt squat and bend and do stairs in a rush anymore .I have a knee that's shot and needs to be replaced at some point .having your leg basicly removed and then reattached is just hard for me to swallow .My advice is dont kill yourself for any employer .If you arnt a asset that makes you a liability and then your gone!!!
