Shipping Receiving Clerk at Engineered Floors

Age Issue.

At 62 ,I understand the age thing all to well. I’m working a job that I like until management starts making it difficult to do your job effectively. Or their obvious favoritism shuts the rest of out of a position that opens up. I have been on a few interviews, attempting to better my situation but, no luck. The second I make eye contact you can tell they aren’t interested. But you go through the motions anyway. Can’t retire. I’m paying student loans so I have bills. Lots of bills. Lol. I plan on working until I’m at least 70 , maybe longer. But I can’t pay my bills on part time minimum wage. Any suggestions?

Retired

I was very fortunate at the company that I was with for 38 years. My heart goes out to you guys that had to work so long for so little. But in order to get this good job. At my previous job that didn't pay much. I worked all the overtime I could, was never late in 3 years, never took a sick day and if I was I still went in. Never turned overtime even though the Supv. asked me at the end of my shift and always pleasant to everyone and never never complained about my work. I like to think that with this positive attitude and work ethics that it got me the job I retired from. But one thing that I have always said if to put food on the table I would work at MacDonald's in the morning and Burger King at night. Keep interviewing and have a heart to heart talk during the interview and express that you plan on working til pass 70 and that you have excellent health now (hope you do). Tell them all the good things about you, like you like to keep busy and learn new things. Always have a smile and think before you answer any questions, they do not mind that that way you give the impression you just do not jump into things. Eventually you will have that connection between you and your interviewer. Keep your chin up and all the luck in the world.

I once got a job by calling the company on Monday and Friday of every week and asking them if they had any openings. After a month the office said come on in we will find something for you, I just want you to stop calling me. God honest truth.

I understand. I am 57 and just re-entering the tech workforce after a very long absence. I also owe $$$ in student loans, so I have no choice but to work until I can no longer do do.

All I know is a age has never been a issue with me. I am willing to work. The should only need a reference. But that's not what's happening. They are telling me they don't want to apply effort to hire me as a employee because of other things. But that's not equal. In my opinion they should not be able to use this site at all.

It's challenging for sure. After your age being a likely issue, even if it goes unsaid, others are likely to come up as well. First could be: "I'm going to have to pay this person a lot." Next could be: "This person has a lot of experience; he might know more than I do and make me look not so good.

There's all the usual stuff but you seem to have the internet too, lol. I'm not a senior yet, I'm just physically disabled, but I have friends in much the same situation as you and I've listened to them... They have trouble finding work, even with their stellar academic records, and having a racial or gender or disability aspect makes it all the more difficult. I've been told lately to try to find an entry level position relating to what I actually want to do and try to find someone willing to make accomodations... So far it's uphill. Best of luck.
