What’s your ‘BEST’ answer to this Cashier assessment question?
A customer buys $7.84 in merchandise and hands you $10 dollars. When you return the change the customer claims he gave you a $20 bill. The store manager is gone. You should…
- Give the man $20 and bag his purchases.
- Give the man the difference between $7.84 and $20.
- Tell the customer to come back when the manager returns.
- Close the line and settle your cash drawer to verify any cash discrepancies.

#4 close the draw down an count the money an if it over 20 he did give it to you me personally I put the money on the top to make sure I right before it even touch my draw!!!!

A strange thing, this did happen to me. I gave the change back and the guy claimed I shorted him $5. The manager on duty pulled my drawer and showed that I didn't short the customer.

Depends on how frequently it happens but more cost effective way would be #2

I would say #3 and tell the customer that the register will show at closing and balancing If it is over that amount the manager will return the money

Well if you have gotten to this point, the answer is number 4. But if you had good cash handling skills it wouldn't have. I run hotels, and taxi drivers, and all types of swindlers will try to short change you. they will come when it is busiest, and they know you are stressed. they purposely come to the busiest line because most criminals are pretty good at judging human behavior, and they know if they put you on the spot, as the person in this scenario was, that most people will take the path of least resistance and want to avoid conflict.
The way to avoid this is to always keep the bill you took for payment, and DO NOT put it in the cash drawer until you have counted back the change to the guest, and he is satisfied. You must keep the bill where it can be seen. If you do this until he walks away, there is zero chance this can happen. If you don't do it this way, you will have to stare down a line of angry people, while you count your drawer.
