Never expected this!
I’ve been unemployed for long time and becoming more depressed about not being able to find a job. My wife is the only one working and carrying the load of the finances in the house which I’m grateful for but the thought of not being able to contribute is wrecking my self-esteem. I saw an ad in one of those free community papers for a dishwasher job and applied. Not exactly where I thought I’d find myself working with an engineering degree but what the hell, a job is a job right. I sent an email stating that I was interested in the job and available for an interview as soon as possible. The manager responded back immediately and asked me to stop by that afternoon for an interview. The restaurant is in my neighborhood so I was able to walk right over. I met with the manager/owner, nice guy, and we chatted for a while about my experience and schedule. He took me on a quick tour of the kitchen and showed me where I would be working and hired me on the spot. So here I am at 45 scrubbing pots and pans and, honestly, loving every minute of it. It’s mindless physical work but I’m just happy to be active and around people again. I already lost 10 pounds since I started working. The kitchen staff are a bunch of hard-working jokers and I get along with great everyone which makes it a fun working environment. I work 6 days a week and still stop by on my day off to check in with the crew and say hi. I get to bring home a paycheck every week and help my wife with the bills. I’m still actively pursuing an Engineering career but for now the kitchen is a happy place for me…..you never know where you could find happiness. Thanks for all your help!

I am 60 Yrs old and got lost my restaurant Mgmt job 3 months ago. I began driving Uber and absolutely love it. No stress and I meet beautiful people every day!!!! I can't do this forever because I can't make enough money but in the meantime am thankful for being able to enjoy life for awhile!!

That's great! I was in a similar situation but I'm single so it's all in me. I had a full time and part time job. The part time job was at Walgreens arms I loved it there! I was looking for a better full time job and I hated to quit Walgreens.
Hang in there. You will find something!

You don't know me, but I wanted to tell you, my dad worked at a family restaurant for 17 yrs, before he was killed in an accident when I was 14 yrs. He worked hard and long hours, but he made himself useful and he was respected by all that dined in that restaurant. Most of all I respected him, he contributed to our family, not only in his work, but with the times we shared at that restaurant.. I learned a lot from him about a work ethic and having pride in a job well done, as well as, how to keep my word. I've been able to find jobs because I watched my dad work at that restaurant and I even filled in for him one day when he became very ill on a holiday. It isn't the kind of job you have that makes you the contributor in your family, as you are a provider of much more meaningful things than just your paycheck, I bet your wife would agree. God Bless You and Yours

Wow! Good for you. So glad you are enjoying the experience. One question I had is whether you are concerned potential companies that would employ you in an engineering capacity would rule you out because your current job isn't in the same field? Do you list your restaurant job on your resume?

Concrgadulations I'm happy for you

I'm so proud of you even with a degree someone may have you by experienced or years on a job and that can be a smack in the face what im trying to say is that you dont always get the job you want with a degree

Thanks for the encouragement!!!!!

Cool!

Need a job i dont know how to do. If you coukd help me i will apreciate .thanks
I actually totally hear you. I know how morale busting being unemployed can be & a job IS a job! Congratulations on your new position! It's funny where you can find happiness! I've put out applications for any kind of job I can find. Unfortunately in my area, I'm 'overqualified' for a job like yours & 'under qualified' for the higher level jobs I've been looking for. 'Overqualified' is a dangerous word for employers to have access to. Most of us that are done with our teenage years are 'overqualified' for a lot of jobs; that doesn't mean we 'adults' don't want them, need them or aren't willing to take them too. & who knows who'll come in to eat at your restaurant on a day you're working & give you a $100,000 a year job. Or maybe you've found a new career niche & might want to consider opening up a franchise! ;)
