The “hobby” question..

I get uncomfortable when asked about my hobbies during interviews. I usually make up activities that are in line with the job I’m applying for. How do you deal with that question?

employers ask those kind of questions to allow the individual the opportunity to "come down to earth" meaning, let's face it, everyone does not approach an interview without some form of butterflies and it allows one to open up more as they elaborate on that in which gives them peace of mind, it also gives employers a chance to see the characteristics coming from the individual because if your hobbies are things obviously that you enjoy leisurely then it shouldn't be an issue to explain why you have a knack for the things you do.

-supervisor/crew leader/ travel agent/ employee... i hope i could expand and give a little insight on your question!

Sincerely, Mr. King.

I love that question. The reason is that not only do I target shoot, ride a motorcycle, and garden, but I also weave chain maille. The genuine surprise I have found at that out of the ordinary answer, as well as the short explanation and question answer seems to loosen my tension and take a bit of pressure off for me.

I was asked that once, and I realized that I didn't HAVE any hobbies because I was working all the time! So I went out and got interested in 3 new ones :) I took flower arranging classes, motorcycle lessons, and yoga.

Groupon is a terrific way to try out some new things on a tight budget - just don't get carried away and buy too many of them!

They are just trying to get to know you a little bit. Just think of it as a way to get into conversation. Sometimes you might have something in common with your interviewer, which definitely help you to feel more relaxed for the rest of it.

Hi Marc: Thanks for posting to Jobcase! I wouldn't feel bad about revealing your hobbies to employers. Even as something as simple as having a stamp collection or writing a blog can show a cool glimpse of your personality. Be confident about what you do!
