Food Server at Server Marcha Bacchus

Bully interview

So I went to an interview at a local restaurant here in Las Vegas after owners sent me email.I sat down with owners and they quizzed me on wine and food knowledge.I did very well. The wine stuff was guest type questions you might get on a given night at a fine dining restaurant and food questions came off their menu and I worked at a place with similar menu so that was pretty easy.I could tell they were impressed bcuz they basically offered me the job. However the lady owner said it would be a problem if I had another job.even just working a cpl days a week somewhere. She went on to say that she needed to be sure I was avail 6 days a week bcuz they keep thin staff and if someone calls out the staff will be called to come in.someone has to fill in.i just started the part time job and my friend basically got me job and I wouldn't feel right just quitting after my first week.that would be classless.its not a great job but still..what should I do?

Javier, I have worked as a server for years... I would take the job, keep the other one and just play it by ear..the odds of you actually havunf to be called in are slim..most places have servers waiting in the wings to puck up shifts..just get some phone numbers so you can contact others to fill in if they call u in on a day when u r working at the other job...dont be bullied..what if u quit and ur friend gets mad and u get a bad reputation and then they NEVER ACTUALLY NEED YOU..thats what i wud do..You can always find another server to work..good luck n dont let them push u around...they rnt gonna compensate you for wages lost if u quit other job r they. u can always just say you r in another paet of city n wont make it in time or u had family emergency..chances of u having to do it twice r slim..

Javier, She seems to be looking after her business. You can agree or disagree with the concept of being available. I understand your problem. If this job is right for you I am sure your friend and the other company will understand as well. If this is a job you have to think about it. If this is a career it seems like an easy decision as the other position is only a job.

Personally, if a job is not willing to work with me, I probably don't want to work for them. They need to understand that people cannot live on part time wages. Also, being on call 24-7 is an intrusion of your life. You can't plan things if you are always on call. I would also not do that to my friend. It doesn't look good on your friend to have recommended you, helped you get the job, only to have you quit. They may not take your friends' recommendation seriously next time and, of course, not only did your friend stick their neck out for you just to have it chopped off, it could affect whoever they recommend next time. That person may really need the job; but, won't be hired because your friend started a track record with someone who wasn't reliable. I am in management and do look at those things. Also, how much respect will the new employer have for you knowing you do not commit and will have no problem dropping them like a rock if you so decide. I work with my employees and understand they have lives, family and bills to pay. some attend college in order to make a better life for themselves. I have no problem with people trying to better themselves and try to adjust things to work within the schedules they have and the ones i am trying to fill. perhaps that's why they tend to stay. however, I would be leery of working somewhere that is inflexible and not concerned with their employees needs. It doesn't bode well for the future.

Dear Bully Interview experienced, wow that seems very needy ...But pushy....if you have made obligations to another job ft or pto, stick to what you first made an obligation for. The first job ...I think this interviewer is a bit pushy.....But think of the bigger picture. They want you to totally be there for them. You just met. So do what you gut feeling is ...Be humble to the first job. If this job honors that you have a previous job. Then they would be more flexible. Besides you know more about the other job. Do not loss that because of obligations pushed onto you.

Freaking selfish to say the least people at the restaurant who will screw you in the end. Ive seen this type before. Watch your back and cover your ass at all times...document any and all incidents against you. You quitting your part-time job to be on call for them without pay does not mean they will ever appreciate your sacrifice for them, it empowers them to abuse you more. If they don't like you enough to accommodate your availability, what more needs to be said? I mean if you happen to be available to cover someone else's shift, why not then. But to insist you always be available is insane. They are not the Union with Union benefits. You are not signing up to be an on-call daily hire are you?
