Job reference is also a personal friend
I have this friend who started out as my co-worker when we first met. We worked together six years ago, then several months later, I left the company to attend school, and in that interim he did too. Since then, we are now friends who get together socially sometimes (not in a relationship). He knows me better now than then and says he would always give me a good reference. Can I still use him?

Hi. Anita I think that you should It seems to be the perfect person for a reference

Yes you can use him but it does depend on what the job is asking there's two kind of references

Tell him to write you a really professional letter and only mention your professional relationship,
it should be fine because you were former coworkers and he knows how you work, plus he knows how you deal with stress and teamwork since you know each other personally

Good Question Anita.. I've also been there when the relationship suddenly changes and then not being sure if that person is the best option for a job reference. I always try to use previous supervisors or managers and I've even offered the HR department for references. Co-workers seems a little too personal for a professional reference.

Yes, you can definitely use him! Employers want a range of references, so go for it!

Absolutely, he can definitely attest to your work ethic and dependability.

Employers look for a healthy mix of references.

Hi Anita, I think that would be fine. They know how you work, which is really what a new employer is looking for.
How long did you really work together? Only several months? I'd use as a personal reference NOT professional. There is a difference! If ever called that person will be grilled and it might backfire on you. Surely you can come up with 2 or 3 whom you have worked with?
