Fuzzy Reference Checks
Why is the employee reference checks between employers is so vague? It’s difficult for me to determine how much I need to explain during an interview about why I left my last job in case is comes up on reference check calls to previous employers. For example, if I had an excellent attendance record and no corrective actions or verbal warnings at my last job but quit without 2 weeks notice. And what about my previous managers personal opinion of me as a worker, how much weight does that carry? Are those type of questions even asked? I would think those questions open the door for prejudice and biased opinions that have nothing to do with work performance. Are there any standard questions they are legally allowed to ask?

Use references that you know will offer praises about you. Look for alternative contacts if you’re unsure about a direct supervisor or manager’s response.

I agree, there’s really no limitation in most cases on what a potential employer is going to ask. The type of response is usually limited to who employer's contact during the check. If they speak directly to your previous manager then you can expect opinionated answers. But if they contact HR then the responses will be more fact based.

lloyd, There’s no state or federal laws that specify or limit the Q&A’s hiring managers are allowed to offer during a reference check. Every company has their own separate policy on how much information they’re willing to share about previous employees.
Always use people who will give you a positive response for references..if you have to question yourself about a specific person don't use them for references
