A Graphic Designer's Challenge
Age discrimination or overqualified or both?! Nine months ago I voluntarily left my job of 5 years due to not getting along with a family member who owned the company I worked for. I thought, I'm an experienced graphic designer, I haven't burned any bridges and I've got over 25 years of experience, how hard could it be to find a new job (in Southwest Florida)? Well, I've applied to over 100 jobs on job websites and directly to company websites, even a few in-person resume drop-offs, which have led to numerous interviews, but none that led to employment. And, yes my resume is posted on many job sites like indeed.com and beyond.com, etc. I've also registered with about 5 employment agencies that required in-person interviews. The majority of graphic designer jobs today require someone who can build websites and maintain social media accounts, which I'm not experienced in. My background is in printed media. So, either I take a few classes (which is difficult with no income!) or I can, and have, sold some of my personal vintage collectibles on ebay. You would think that years of hands-on experience would be a benefit, but as for graphic designers, the market is flooded with them now, and many companies want "young" talent. I don't expect that anyone has an answer for me, but I just wanted to share my story because I think Graphic Designer jobs are few and far-between. One final note: Yes, I've applied to Chico''s, which has its headquarters in Fort Myers, FL, but in my opinion they want people fresh out of college.
